Ex-vice chair of Lotte loses key case at Japan court

Japan’s Supreme Court rejected an appeal by Shin Dong-joo, the eldest son of Lotte founder Shin Kyuk-ho, who had been seeking compensation claiming unfair dismissal.

Japan’s Supreme Court rejected Shin’s appeal on Thursday.

Shin, who was fired as Tokyo-based Lotte Holdings vice chairman in late 2014, lodged a compensation suit in November 2015 for what he described as the unfair dismissal from board positions at four Lotte subsidiaries, including Lotte International and Lotte Property & Development.

Shin had demanded 620 million yen ($5.77 million) in compensation.

The Tokyo District Court in 2017 dismissed Shin’s claim, and the Tokyo High Court dismissed the appeal last year.

Shin was expected to propose his return to the board at the Lotte Holdings annual shareholder meeting set to take place on June 26 in Tokyo, but the Supreme Court’s recent decision could prevent Shin from returning.

Shin has attempted to return to the management of Lotte Holdings four times since 2016 without success.
