SK opens access to 46 APIs, 85 by end of 2019

June 27,2019
SK Group application programming interfaces (API) are being made available to developers.

APIs allow for programmatic access to existing services or data for incorporation into third-party solutions.

The group announced Wednesday that it will permit access to an API portal featuring 46 APIs from SK Telecom, SK Holdings C&C, SK Hynix, SK Planet, SK Broadband and SK Siltron.

The key APIs include SK Telecom’s T map and everyair, which provides fine dust level information, SK Holdings C&C’s Aiden, an artificial intelligence (AI) offering, and SK Broadband’s Cloud cam, which allows users to save videos directly on the cloud.

Companies will be able to create new software or services by incorporating or embedding technologies, data or content provided by SK. Those wishing to connect with the APIs will need to register for access.

A start-up that plans to launch an AI-based access control system, for instance, could utilize the T map API to receive information on locations and the Aiden API for the facial recognition. To add a function that records the entry of an individual to a location, the developer can connect to the Cloud Cam API.

“In the 5G era, ICT technologies and services are expected to transform in a direction and at a speed we had not expected,” said Park Jin-hyo, executive vice president of the ICT R&D Center at SK Telecom, at a press event held in Bundang, Gyeonggi, on Wednesday. “By sharing the key ICT assets possessed by the SK ICT Family, we hope to contribute to creating the 5GX ecosystem, and ultimately create social values.”

“Through SK’s open API portal, the speed of the development of the 5G-based digital system and service will be accelerated,” said Kim Jun-hwan, vice president at SK Holdings C&C. “We will contribute by providing optimized digital systems and services for customers by offering [AI platform] Aibril to various domestic developers as part of the cooperation.”

SK plans to increase its API offerings to 85 this year, with the hope of creating new economic value for both the business-to-consumer and business-to-business operations.

The company says it will gain nothing in providing open API access and only wishes to create social value by freeing its API portfolio.
