Hong Hyung-sook joins Academy

Documentary director Hong Hyung-sook was appointed a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the DMZ International Documentary Film Festival announced on Friday.

Each year, the institution grants distinguished film organizers - including directors, producers and technicians - with the right to vote for the Oscars, one of the world’s most prestigious film awards.

Hong’s works include “The Border City 2” (2010), which was praised for its modern interpretation of the inconsistency of ideologies in a divided country. Her other works include “Doomealee: A New School is Opening” (1995), “The Border City” (2002), and “Junha’s Planet” (2018). She is currently the director of the DMZ Film Festival.
