Possible CPA exam leak being investigated by authorities

July 12,2019
The Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) is under fire after questions from the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam apparently were leaked.

The regulator administers the test, which is used in qualifying CPAs.

It said Wednesday that it is looking into the possible leak, acknowledging that students from Sungkyunkwan University may have been in possession of information from a recent exam. The content and format of parts of a test given on June 29 and June 30 matched their study materials.

“The two questions that triggered doubts from media outlets were similar in terms of content and format,” the regulator said in a statement.

The regulator warned that these facts alone are not enough to prove that the actual exam has been stolen and circulated.

“The content is covered in many different test materials, and there is a difference in the way the question is asked and expressed,” it said.

The case generated interest as an online petition was posted on the Blue House’s website.

“The suspicion first surfaced in a post on Daum’s online community,” read a post that garnered 5,843 signatories as of Thursday.

“If the argument was groundless, it could have been just passed around and gone,” it read, “But there were comments that back the claim, which spread and reinforced the suspicion.”

The regulator vowed to look into whether any test examiner violated rules.

“The FSS will closely investigate any unusual circumstance during the test making and evaluation process,” the FSS said, adding that the regulator will check if there are any loopholes that can be exploited.
