Lia Kim bounces back to the top: K-pop choreographer is known worldwide thanks to YouTube

Lia Kim [KWON HYUK-JAE]

For anyone familiar with K-pop, the name Lia Kim, or at least her company 1MILLION Dance Studio, may ring a bell.

Kim is one of the industry’s most recognizable choreographers, having worked with the likes of Lee Hyori, HyunA, Hyoyeon of Girls’ Generation and CL, and created the dances for Sunmi’s “Gashina” as well as Twice’s “TT.”

Kim’s fame goes beyond Korea thanks to her dance studio 1MILLION’s YouTube channel, which boasts over 16.5 million subscribers worldwide. Some 95 percent of people who view the videos hail from abroad.

“Even global dance competitions only host 2,000 people at most, so I’m still amazed that millions, even tens of millions of people watch our videos,” Kim told the JoongAng Ilbo, an affiliate of the Korean JoongAng Daily, during a recent interview at 1MILLION Dance Studio in Gangnam District, southern Seoul.

“I danced with the intention of being the best before, but now I feel it’s more important to have fun together,” she added. “I can better focus on my dance now that the pressure to compete is gone.”

Kim’s rollercoaster journey to the top began when she was in her last year of middle school in 1999. She fell in love with dance after watching Michael Jackson perform during his concert in Korea on television. Instead of going to college, Kim attended dance academies to master the basic techniques and joined the Winners dance crew, through which she taught a class for gifted students. HyunA, Hyoyeon and CL were some of her students.

Professionals soon recognized Kim’s talents. She scored the chance to show off her choreography on television through a 2005 commercial for Samsung’s Anycall phone where she and Lee Hyori performed a routine she choreographed. In her early twenties, Kim placed first in the popping and locking categories of a local street dance competition titled “4 DA Next Level.”

Kim’s early victories didn’t bring notable changes to her life, however.

“I was only happy for three days after my win,” Kim recalled. “It felt like I was on top of the world but in reality I was just going back and forth between my basement dance studio and a rental room.”

Making a living as a dancer was difficult then - choreographers struggled to hold on to the rights of their creations and people didn’t see dancing as a respectable career choice.

To stand out from others, Kim joined multiple talent audition shows like “Star Audition 2” (2011) and “Dancing9” (2013). Her early elimination from “Dancing9” marked a low point in her career, as the panel of judges included her former students Hyoyeon and Yuri of Girls' Generation.

“I could stand back up because I had hit rock bottom,” Kim said. “Although other dancers made fun of me, it became an opportunity to make my name known.”

“After songs that I worked on like Sunmi’s ‘24 Hours’ and ‘Gashina’ and Twice’s ‘TT’ became commercial hits, people were curious to know who choreographed the dances. Choreographers began receiving the same level of respect as producers and songwriters.”

Today, as one of Korea’s most in-demand choreographers, Kim comes up with dances for many K-pop girl groups, recently working with Everglow on their track “Bon Bon Chocolat.”

When she works with artists for the first time, she tries to spend enough time getting to know them so she can showcase their personalities through the dance moves. Given the fast pace of the K-pop industry, Kim’s usually required to complete choreography for a song within just two weeks.

“I tend to get inspiration from movies for my choreography,” Kim said. The dance for “24 Hours,” for example, was influenced by “Black Swan” (2010).

Kim developed her current signature look - a silky jet-black bob - soon after she closed down her basement studio Brain Dance Studio in 2014 to co-open 1MILLION in its current home on the third and fourth floors of a building in Gangnam District, southern Seoul.

Her first memoir, published just last month, is titled “My Short Black Hair” (translated) in reference to how her hairdo accompanied her success as a dancer and businesswoman.

With 20 choreographers in the company and annual revenue totaling 3 billion won ($2.5 million) last year, 1MILLION is getting ready to move into a new building in the hip neighborhood of Seongsu-dong, eastern Seoul, this November.

“Although we surpassed our initial goal for 1MILLION, we want to become a space where people can feel comfortable dancing, dropping by on their way to work like going to Starbucks or McDonald’s,” said Kim.

“Although K-dance’s strength lies in the high quality we present through rigorous training, the factory-like uniformity is also its weakness. I think anyone who dances like they’re under their own spell is a good dancer.”
