K-pop India highlights Hallyu

The Korean Culture Centre India and LG Electronics jointly hosted the grand finale of the K-pop India Contest 2019 on Saturday at the Talkatora Stadium in New Delhi, in the midst of an escalating Hallyu, or the Korean Wave, boom within the country.

A total of 28 teams - 15 dance teams and 13 vocal teams - competed in the final after facing tough competition this year. The rise in the popularity of K-pop boy band BTS led to an upsurge in the number of participants, according to the organizers. A total of 1,952 teams, or 3,475 contestants, applied to compete this year, whereas only 532 teams, or 1,216 contestants, applied in 2018.

The winners in the dancing and vocal division were Lokalz Crew, who danced EXO’s “Love Shot,” and Harini Nittala, who sang BTS’s “Euphoria.”

One of the teams will be given the opportunity to compete in the 2019 Changwon K-pop World Festival this October as the Indian representative. The Indian representatives in 2016 and 2017 won the Excellent Vocal and Best Performance Awards respectively.
