‘Parasite’ is a major hit in Vietnam

Local film “Parasite” is proving to be a hit in Vietnam, according to the film distribution company CJ Entertainment on Tuesday.

Debuting at number one at the Vietnamese box office, the film had made a total of $1.95 million on its 11th day in theaters in the country. The previous record was held by “Train to Busan” (2016) which made more than $1.86 million.

The film ranked within the top five of the box office until its third week and is currently on the brink of exceeding one million tickets sold.

According to insiders, it’s rare for foreign films in Vietnam to surpass one million tickets sold. Only popular Hollywood blockbusters usually have a chance to exceed the milestone.

“Even recently, about 2,000 to 3,000 moviegoers have come steadily every day to watch the film,” an insider at CJ Entertainment noted.

“We are thinking of extending the screening period up until the beginning of August.”

Due to its popularity, “Parasite” has become the first Korean film to be screened in Vietnamese theaters for more than a month.

The film was released on June 21 in Vietnam.
