Ronaldo must apologize (KOR)

The way world-class football player Cristiano Ronaldo behaved in Korea during and after a friendly match on Friday was disappointing. The Portuguese forward for Italian club Juventus FC, upset the tens of thousands fans gathered at the World Cup Stadium in Seoul to see him play. Juventus was given 3.5 billion won ($2.96 million) to play the K-League All Stars under the condition that Ronaldo play in the game for at least 45 minutes. Instead, he sat on the bench while watching his teammates play the game. The way Juventus reacted to the outrage of Korean football fans was more baffling, as it made excuses instead of apologizing for violating the contract.

Not one person in attendance could have expected that they would not have been able to see the football star play after paying more than 400,000 won ($339) a ticket. Even after the Italian team delayed the match by one hour due to its late arrival, over 60,000 spectators shouted “Ronaldo!” whenever he appeared on the scoreboard. But they felt a strong sense of betrayal after he left the stadium without even setting his foot on the field — and without making eye contact with his fans.

In a press conference shortly after the match, Maurizio Sarri, the manager of Juventus, said Ronaldo has not been able to play since July 25 — a day before the match — due to a muscle injury. But the organizer of the event said his name was on the roster Juventus submitted one hour before the game.

Ronaldo fueled Korean fans’ rage by posting footage of him running on a treadmill — along with the words “Nice to be back home” — on social media without making any personal apology to his Korean fans.

Ronaldo was consistently dismissive of his Korean fans and even skipped all his officially scheduled events, including a signing event, during his 10-hour stay in Korea. Juventus also reacted arrogantly by saying that it will be OK for the Serie A football club to pay over 800 million won ($677,000) in fines. The K League must demand an apology from both Juventus and Ronaldo.

Otherwise, Korea will become a country for renowned football clubs in Europe to make money easily on insincere matches.

호날두와 유벤투스에게서 해명과 사과 받아내야 한다
월드 클래스라더니, 프로다운 자기관리나 팬 서비스는 도저히 용납할 수 없을 정도로 실망스러웠다. 지난 26일 밤 한국 축구팬 뿐 아니라 온 국민의 자존심에 큰 상처를 입힌 이탈리아 프로축구단 유벤투스와 팀 간판스타 크리스티아누 호날두(포르투갈) 얘기다. 유벤투스는 '호날두 최소 45분 출장'이라는 계약조건을 앞세워 한국에 12시간(실제론 10시간 15분) 체류하며 K리그 올스타팀과 딱 한 번 친선경기를 하는 조건으로 35억 원가량을 가져갔다. 하지만 호날두는 이날 약속된 45분은 고사하고 아예 몸을 풀지도 않은 채 벤치만 지켰고, 유벤투스 역시 실망한 팬들에게 사과하기는커녕 무성의한 해명으로 일관해 분노를 자아냈다.
세계 최고 스타의 화려한 플레이를 직접 볼 수 있다는 기대감에 최고 40만 원대의 입장료를 기꺼이 낸 6만여 관중 가운데 호날두의 결장을 예상한 이는 아무도 없었다. 유벤투스가 사상 초유의 지각 사태로 경기를 1시간이나 지연시켰지만 관중들은 오히려 전광판에 호날두가 등장할 때마다 그의 이름을 연호하며 따뜻한 팬심을 보냈다. 하지만 단 1분도 뛰지 않은 호날두가 관중과 눈 한 번 마주치지 않고 경기장을 떠나버리자 축구팬들은 심한 배신감을 느낄 수밖에 없었다. 악천후와 무더위에도 호날두가 나오기만을 기다리며 몇 시간이나 경기장을 지켰던 어린이 팬 상당수는 울음을 터뜨리기까지 했다.
마우리치오 사리 유벤투스 감독은 경기 직후 기자회견에서 "호날두 근육 상태가 좋지 않아 어제(25일)부터 이미 뛰지 않기로 결정돼 있었다"고 말했다. 하지만 경기 1시간 전 전달한 출전선수 명단엔 호날두가 포함돼 있었다는 게 국내 주최 측의 주장이다. 호날두 본인도 이탈리아로 귀국하자마자 자신의 SNS에 한국팬에 대한 사과 한마디 없이 '집에 오니 좋다(Nice to back home)'라는 자막을 단 런닝머신 뛰는 영상을 올렸다. '대국민 사기극'이라는 비판이 쏟아지는 이유다.
우리 국민이 분노하는 건 호날두가 팬 사인회를 비롯해 입국부터 귀국까지 10여 시간 동안 약속된 모든 공식 일정을 건너뛰며 시종일관 한국을 무시하는 듯한 태도를 보였고, 유벤투스 역시 진정성 있는 사과 대신 "(8억 원대의) 위약금만 물어주면 그만"이라는 식으로 오만하게 대응한 탓이 크다. 애먼 한국프로축구연맹만 연거푸 사과했지만 그걸로 그칠 일이 아니다. 한국을 기만한 유벤투스와 호날두에게 적절한 해명을 요구하고 사과를 받아내야 한다. 그렇지 않으면 유럽 명문 스포츠 구단들에게 "한국은 한나절 들러 돈만 챙기면 되는 호구(虎口)의 나라"라고 광고하는 것이나 마찬가지가 아니겠나.
