When poisonous gas began enveloping the city during a recent screening of the apocalyptic movie “Exit,” a white fog started seeping through the theater as well. The seats rattled as actors Cho Jung-seok and Lim Yoon-a struggled to climb up a building to escape the hazardous substance. The audience held their collective breath, as if they were transported into the movie, and tried to find a way out alive along with the film’s protagonists.

At 8:30 a.m. on Saturday morning, the 4DX theater inside CGV’s Sinchon branch in western Seoul was crowded with people young and old enjoying an especially immersive showing of “Exit,” which currently holds the No. 1 spot at the Korean box office. The recent release has attracted a total of 3.7 million moviegoers, many of whom opted to watch or re-watch the movie in 4D to maximize their engagement with the action-packed film, thanks to the help of moving chairs, water sprinklers and wind effects.

Korea’s cinema business is doing better than ever with the growing popularity of special theaters. The live-action edition of “Aladdin” is a notable beneficiary. Although it had a slow start, the musical film went on to sell more than 10 million tickets, many of them coming from special theaters.

Even three months after its release, the best seats for “Aladdin” screenings in CGV’s 4DX theaters are still taken days ahead. Elements of the adventurous fantasy story make it a perfect film to be screened at 4DX theaters, which allow for motion, water, lights and scent to be utilized during screenings. For example, when Aladdin and Princess Jasmine fly over a waterfall on their magic carpet ride, the theater seats and water sprinklers activate to offer audiences the sensation that they’re also flying high.

On July 19, CGV offered a special treat to fans when it held a “dance-along” screening of “Aladdin” at its 4DX theater in the Yongsan branch, central Seoul. The movie chain has hosted the opportunity for moviegoers to sing and dance as they please multiple times since June. Among the lucky 130 people who managed to get access to the screening, there were fans who’ve seen the movie 17 days in a row, dressed as not only Aladdin and Princess Jasmine but Abu, Iago and even the magic carpet. They passionately sang “Speechless” and “A Whole New World,” some by heart.

“Aladdin” is now the first film to attract 1 million people to 4DX theaters. It easily broke the previous record set five years ago by “Frozen,” which had only attracted 480,000 viewers to 4DX theaters.

The impressive figures point to how increasingly more moviegoers visit theaters to enjoy a multi-sensory experience. According to data by the Korean Film Council (Kofic), special theaters like 3D, 4D and IMAX attracted some 3.52 million moviegoers in the first six months of the year - 9.9 percent more compared to the same period last year. This translated into a 2.5 billion won ($2.06 million) rise in revenue at special theaters, and an average ticket price of 8,514 won across all theaters, the highest figure in Korean cinema history.

Cinema franchise Lotte Cinema saw 70 percent more moviegoers coming to its 4D theaters in the first seven months of this year compared to last year. Megabox’s MX theater, which uses surround sound technology to offer an immersive experience, rode on the popularity of music films like “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Aladdin” to attract 17 percent more moviegoers in the first half of this year.

CGV’s ScreenX theaters, which feature a three-walled screening format, also attracted 26 percent more viewers in the first half of this year compared to last year. Some 220,000 people flocked to ScreenX theaters to watch the BTS documentary film “Love Yourself in Seoul” while “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Captain Marvel” sold an accumulated 930,000 tickets and 170,000 tickets, respectively.

The popularity of special theaters goes hand-in-hand with the rising trend of watching the same film more than once. According to CGV, the recent films that have attracted the most repeat viewings - “Avengers: Endgame,” “Aladdin,” “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Frozen” - all did well in special theaters like 4DX.

“When there’s a film that’s good for screening in special theaters, cinemas begin marketing events to encourage moviegoers to watch a film multiple times,” said Kang Kyu-jin, a spokesperson for Megabox. “In the case of Marvel’s ‘Avengers’ films, they already had a large fan base and were suitable for screening in various formats, so that it was natural for people to watch them multiple times at different special theaters.”

“Our special theaters sometimes screen older films that viewers might have seen online but want to watch again enjoying the theater experience,” said Kang. “We are planning to hold special screenings of films like ‘La La Land’ and ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ in our MX theaters later this year.”

The success of special theaters is also helping cinema chains find an edge against new streaming competitors like Netflix.

“With our new cinema technology, people can now enjoy movie theaters like they do a theme park,” said CGV spokesperson Hwang Jae-hyun. “We’ve gained insight on how to provide better content as we continue to compete with smartphones and online streaming platforms.”

저는 주중 4DX(CJ CGV의 자체 4D 브랜드) 보면 5회차 될 예정입니다.”
