38,000 vehicle recalls ordered for faulty parts

More than 38,000 vehicles from four automakers and import companies, including Hyundai Motor and Porsche Korea, will be voluntarily recalled due to faulty parts.

This is the latest in a series of government-mandated recalls on vehicles from local carmakers, foreign carmakers and importers.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced in a statement Thursday that 10 models and 38,117 vehicles in total will be recalled for faulty parts.

The auto companies are starting the recall efforts as early as Friday and will provide maintenance for free on the faulty parts.

Hyundai Motor will recall 32,637 of its all-new Mighty trucks for a faulty air conditioning system. Metal dust accumulates in the air conditioner switch, and the dust could catch fire, the ministry said.

Porsche Korea will take in 2,693 of its Panamera 970 models and 636 of its Cayenne 9PA SUVs for faulty gear levers.

The ministry said plastic bushings on the gear levers were found to be easily destroyed, preventing the drivers from shifting as needed. The Korean unit of the German sports automaker is offering free maintenance services for the gear levers from Monday.

FMK, the importer of Ferraris and Maseratis, is recalling 1,383 units of five models with faulty LED headlamps, as those lamps could cause too much glare for other drivers on the road. Hanbul Motors, which imports Peugeot and Citroen vehicles, will take in 858 units of the Peugeot 2008 Allure 1.6 BlueHDi for tire pressure alarms that fail to notify owners even if tire pressure level is low.

Earlier this month, the ministry announced recall plans for a total of 42,320 vehicles - 35 car models - made or sold by six companies, including Kia Motors, GM Korea, Honda Korea and BMW Korea.
