Summer Water Light Festival
Suncheon Bay National Garden, South Jeolla

Through Aug. 25

The city of Suncheon, the country’s ecological capital, has kicked off its annual summer event at its iconic Suncheon Bay National Garden. This year’s Summer Water Light Festival features a water show, light gardens and a variety of food, music, games and entertainment programs for families to enjoy. The southwestern city launched the Visit Suncheon Year campaign this year, aiming to attract 10 million tourists.

A water show will be held at the garden’s lake at 8, 8:30 and 9 p.m. each day, featuring exciting fountains and music.

From Aug. 2 to 4, D.J. performances and a chicken and beer festival will be held, organizers said, noting family tourists will also be invited to enjoy a water gun competition, as well as a K-pop singing competition and dance event.

Three outdoor swimming pools will be available for children, while water and art gardens will also captivate visitors.

The festival opens at 6 p.m. and runs through 10 p.m. each day.

Tickets are priced at 4,000 won ($3.31) for adults, 3,000 won for middle and high school students and 2,000 won for elementary school students. Children younger than 6 and seniors older than 65 can enter for free. For more information, call 1577-2013 or visit http://garden.sc.go.kr



Pocheon Idong Galbi Barbecue Festival
Doridol Village, Pocheon, Gyeonggi

Every year, Pocheon, home to the beautiful Sanjeong Lake and other famous valleys, holds a festival dedicated to galbi, an all-time favorite dish for many Koreans and expats. Galbi refers to marinated beef ribs.

The main event of the barbecue festival is experiencing the taste of Pocheon. During the festival period, people are able to enjoy galbi at relatively low prices.

Visitors can also buy galbi to take home with them.

One serving of Pocheon Idong Galbi is 500 grams (1 pound) and costs 20,000 won. An additional 12,000 won is charged for visitors who wish to grill the meat on the spot. The additional fee covers charcoal, grills, condiments, vegetables and other grilling tools. Nearby sightseeing places include Baekun Valley and Pocheon Art Valley, a park which features outdoor sculptures and Cheonju Lake.

Songdo Beer Festival
Pentaport Park, Incheon

Held at Pentaport Park, which can accommodate more than 30,000 people, the Songdo Beer Festival features live concerts, fireworks and a beer and food festival. At no cost, the nine-day festival’s concert lineup features musicians from many different music genres, including rock, hip hop and EDM.

DMZ Peace Tour Train
From Yongsan Station to an area close to the Demilitarized Zone

The “DMZ Peace Tour Train,” a tour program taking passengers to major symbolic spots along the highly fortified demilitarized zone (DMZ) that separates the two Koreas, will have a trial run until Aug. 31 before officially launching on Sept. 1.

The tour set up by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Tourism Organization departs from Seoul’s Yongsan Station. It stops first at the South Korean side of the Imjin River, which originates from North Korea’s South Hamgyong Province across the DMZ. The train then arrives at Dorasan Station, a major train station that used to run between what is now South and North Korea. There, passengers will transfer to a bus to visit the Dorasan Peace Park, a border village known as Tongil-chon, as well as the Third Tunnel of Aggression, one of the many secret tunnels that the North drilled as a channel to penetrate into the South. The entire tour from and back to Yongsan station is eight hours.

Marriott International, all-inclusive platform

Responding to consumers’ growing desire for premium, worry-free vacations, Marriott International announced it is launching an all-inclusive platform to serve this increasingly popular vacation segment. The company also announced that it has signed contracts with hotel developers who plan to build five new all-inclusive resorts, investing more than $800 million and demonstrating their confidence in Marriott International’s scale, loyalty platform and operational expertise. The resorts are expected to open between 2022 and 2025.

Marriott International plans to further expand its all-inclusive portfolio in popular, leisure destinations worldwide with a mix of new-build properties and conversions of existing resorts, including properties currently in the Marriott International portfolio. The new platform will provide the company’s 133 million Marriott Bonvoy members the option to earn and redeem points for this convenient, pay-one-price concept. Marriott International’s newly signed management contracts are expected to deliver five all-inclusive properties in the Caribbean and Latin America that, combined, would offer more than 2,000 rooms.

The planned resorts include: 650-room Autograph Collection resort in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic in 2022, as well as four spots in NIA, Riviera Nayarit, Mexico.

Mexico spots include 240-room The Ritz-Carlton resort and 400-room Westin Hotels resort expected to open in 2023 as well as 300-room Autograph Collection resort and 500-room Marriott Hotels resort, anticipated to open in 2025.
