[앵커브리핑] '누가 존 웨인을 죽였는가' (“Who killed John Wayne?”)

몽골제국의 위대한 왕 칭기즈 칸의 일대기를 그린 할리우드 영화의 제목은 '정복자.' 1954년에 찍은 이 작품은 좀 기이했습니다. 카우보이의 대명사였던 존 웨인이 동양의 영웅인 칭기즈 칸 역을 맡은 데다 내용 또한 서구 중심적이어서 평가는 당연히 박했던 것이지요.

“The Conqueror” is a Hollywood movie about the life of Genghis Khan, the great king of the Mongol Empire. The 1954 movie was peculiar. John Wayne, famous for his cowboy roles, played the part of the Asian hero Genghis Khan and the film was also centered on Western culture, so it was natural that the audience would be stingy in their reviews.

그러나 정작 기이한 점은 따로 있었습니다. 주연배우인 존 웨인을 비롯해서 영화 제작진 다수가, 즉 감독까지 포함한 다수가 '암'에 걸렸다는 사실. 존 웨인은 영화 촬영 후 25년이 지난 1979년에 오랜 암 투병 끝에 숨졌습니다.

However, the strangest thing about the movie came from somewhere else. It was the fact that a majority of the movie’s crew, including the main actor John Wayne and the film’s director, got cancer. John Wayne fought cancer for a long period of time and passed away in 1979, 25 years after he filmed the movie.

일본의 저널리스트이자 평화활동가인 히로세 다카시는 그 이유를 다음과 같이 추론했습니다. 영화가 제작되기 1년 전인 1953년, 미국 네바다주에서는 '클라이맥스'라는 원자폭탄 실험이 진행되었는데, 핵실험 이후 생긴 일명 '죽음의 재'가 영화의 촬영 현장인 유타주 스노 캐니언에 흩날리고 있었다는 것입니다.

Takashi Hirose, a Japanese journalist and peace activist, created the following theory about the reason for the crew’s death. A year before the movie was produced in 1953, there was a nuclear bomb experiment code-named “Climax” in U.S. state of Nevada. The theory is that the “ashes of death” that were created by the nuclear experiment scattered to the area where the movie was filmed, in Snow Canyon State Park, Utah.

The set was more than 200 kilometers (124 miles) away from the nuclear test site, but the ashes of death that spread by flying over the nearby mountains and terrain made 91 out of the around 220 people on the crew get cancer, and of those people, killed over a half of them.

매우 두려운 추론이었습니다. 물론 이것은 말씀드린 대로 추론입니다. 그러나 영화 제작진 절반이 암에 걸린 이 기이한 통계 수치는 합리적인 의심을 가져오기에 충분했고… 당시에도 위정자들은 걱정하는 시민들의 목소리를 막는 데 급급했습니다.

The theory was a very dreadful one. Of course, as I said before, it is a theory. But strange statistics that come with half of the filming crew getting cancer was enough for some to suspect that something was out of the ordinary… At the time, politicians were busy cutting off people who were worried about the issue.

과연 그럴까… 그렇지 않다는 것을 일본사람들이 누구보다 잘 알고 있을 것입니다. 오늘(19일) 전해드린 보도에 따르면 후쿠시마의 오염토는 처리할 장소조차 찾지 못해서 대충 옮겨놓은 채 이른바 '재건올림픽', 즉 부흥올림픽을 준비하고 있는 것… 그리고 모두가 우려하는 대로 100만 톤이 넘는 후쿠시마 '방사능 오염수'를 바다로 버릴 경우 그것은 '재건'이 아니라 '재앙'이며 우리의 아름다운 동해도 그것을 피할 수 없다는 것…

Is this true? If this is not the case, the Japanese would know better than anyone else. In today’s [Aug. 19] report, Japan is said to be preparing a “rebuilding Olympics,” which is a so-called revival Olympics, notwithstanding that the nation is unable to find a place to deal with Fukushima’s contaminated soil and has precariously moved it elsewhere else… The thing that all of us are worried about is Fukushima’s over 100 tons of “radioactive contaminated water” being dumped into the sea. In this case, this is not a “rebuilding,” but a “disaster” and our beautiful East Sea will also be affected by this…

앞서 영화 '정복자'의 주인공 존 웨인의 불운을 말씀드렸지만, 이 영화의 여주인공이었고 할리우드의 명배우였던 수전 헤이워드 역시 그보다 몇 년 앞서 존 웨인이 겪었던 비운을 먼저 겪었는데… 아이러니하게도 수전 헤이워드가 아카데미 여우주연상을 받았던 작품의 제목은 '나는 살고 싶다'였습니다.
