BIFF announces special exhibitions

The Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) announced special exhibitions to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the local film industry on Wednesday.

Two exhibitions that will be held during the festival are “The 100 Year History of Korean Cinema, 10 Great Korean Films” and “Gaze and Memories - Asia’s Leading Women Filmmakers.”

“One of the crucial roles of BIFF is to archive, select, and introduce compelling traditional Korean films that encapsulates Korean history, traditions and customs,” programmer Jung Han-seok said. The 10 films to be screened in the exhibition “The 100 Year History of Korean Cinema” represent the historical and cultural heritage of the local film industry, some of the classics including “The Housemaid (1960) by director Kim Ki-young, “Sopyeonje” (1993) by director Im Kwon-taek, “The Day a Pig Fell into the Well” (1996) by director Hong Sang-soo, “Memories of Murder” (2003) by director Bong Joon-ho, and “Old Boy” (2003) by director Park Chan-wook.

In the latter exhibition, acclaimed filmmakers Deepa Mehta, Yasmin Ahmad, and Trinh T. Minh-ha will lead the programs, conducting various forums and guest visit programs to cover feminist issues.

The two exhibitions will be held throughout the festival week, from Oct. 3 to 12 this year.
