Mike Figgis to judge films at BIFF

British film director Mike Figgis has been confirmed to be the head juror of the upcoming 24th Busan International Film Festival (BIFF)’s New Currents Section.

According to BIFF on Friday, Figgis will be one of five jurors responsible for selecting the recipients of this year’s New Currents Awards, an Asian film competition.

Figgis is an internationally-acclaimed director who won the National Society of Film Critics Award for Best Director for “Leaving Las Vegas” (1995). The hit film’s star Nicholas Cage also won Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance.

Figgis’s first encounter with BIFF dates back to the festival’s second run in 1997, when he was invited to screen “One Night Stand” (1997).

Other jurors overseeing the New Currents Section include Karel Och, artistic director of the Czech-based Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, Samal Yeslyamova, winner of Best Actress at Cannes for “Ayka” (2018), Malaysia-born actress Angelica Lee, winner of Best Actress at Hong Kong’s Golden Bauhinia Awards, and CEO Suh Young-joo of Finecut, a Korea-based film distributor.

The BIFF also announced the three jurors for the Kim Jiseok Award, which it created in 2017 to celebrate notable Asian films in honor of the late Kim Ji-seok, BIFF’s former head programmer and a dedicated supporter of Asian cinema. Jurors in this section are Iranian film director Mohsen Makhmalbaf, Busan Cinema Center’s program director Huh Moon-young and Malaysian filmmaker Tan Chui Mui, who received the New Currents Award in the 11th BIFF.

The 24th BIFF will run from Oct. 3 to 12 at the Busan Cinema Center and selected venues in Haeundae District, Busan.
