Org chart is flattened at Hyundai Motor Group

Sept 03,2019
Hyundai Motor Group is streamlining its structure to break the rigid corporate hierarchy and promote better work performance.

The automaker announced in a statement Monday that it will reduce six job titles to four while implementing an absolute evaluation system for the performance of employees starting this month.

The two highest ranks of the six will be combined into a single rank, and the same will be done for the two lowest ranks as well.

Also as a part of the new system, Hyundai Motor Group said it is abolishing time restrictions on promotions, allowing employees to move up as fast as their performance warrants.

Under the previous system, employees needed to spend a required number of years in their positions or accumulate enough points.

But with the new system that abolishes those requirements, it is theoretically possible for an employee to be promoted two years in a row.

Each employee will be rated for his or her own work and will not be affected by the performance of others.

Hyundai Motor Group added the evaluations will consider the comments of colleagues.

“As the managerial environment changes abruptly, our employees understand we need a new turning point, so we have pushed for changing our human resources system,” a Hyundai Motor Group spokesperson said.

The initiative is the latest by Hyundai Motor Group as it works to break the rigid corporate culture in favor of a more flexible approach.
