A movie about a young girl living in Korea in 1994 has been winning major awards at film festivals around the world for the past year.

Rookie director Kim Bo-ra’s feature film debut “House of Hummingbird,” released locally last Thursday, already has 25 film prizes to its name. The movie not only won the NETPAC and Audience awards at the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) last year, but it also scored a prize at the Berlin International Film Festival and took home three prizes from the Tribeca Film Festival.

The film’s wide appeal is all the more surprising as the story is based on what seems like a very parochial setting - the director’s own childhood growing up in a family that runs a rice cake business in Seoul.

“I have a lot of stories from when I was a middle school student in 1994 that I could turn into movies,” Kim told the JoongAng Ilbo, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily, during a recent interview. “The first thing that comes to mind is the collapse of the Seongsu Bridge. That shocking and painful incident is connected with other confusions that my 14-year-old self experienced.”

In “House of Hummingbird,” which Kim describes as “the emotional map of 7th grader Eun-hee in 1994,” the protagonist, played by Park Ji-hu, is the youngest daughter of a family that runs a rice cake business in Seoul, just like Kim.

Although from afar her life may appear simple, upon closer inspection, it’s dotted with problems like abusive family members and friendship betrayals that together paint a larger landscape that represents an era.

The collapse of the Seongsu Bridge adds even more confusion to Eun-hee’s life, which is based on a real tragedy that occurred in Oct. 1994. When the bridge over the Han River gave in during a busy Friday morning, it killed 32 and injured 17, many of them commuting students.

“Who would have known that the bridge would go down,” Kim said. “After the Seoul Summer Olympics in 1988, a hole began appearing in people’s hearts as they tried to develop and build everything quickly. The Seongsu Bridge and the Sampoong Department Store collapsed one after another, and then the financial crisis broke out.”

Kim believes that a key factor that made the movie so appealing abroad is that many audiences had memories of national tragedies akin to the Seongsu Bridge collapse that they could relate to.

“The Genova bridge fell in Italy last year, and some Japanese viewers cried thinking of the tsunamis and earthquakes in their country,” Kim said.

“I was glad that people were able to see the movie as a universal tale of a person expanding their world and desiring freedom rather than just as a coming-of-age story about a middle school student,” she added.

Although “House of Hummingbird” is based on personal memories, Kim said she tried to make the movie as relatable as possible.

“Where I lived in Daechi-dong, southern Seoul, kids would endlessly compare their wealth with each other, creating a division between the rich and the poor,” she said. “The relative poverty I felt then and other aspects of my adolescence are in the film, but I went through the process of trying to take myself out to add universality.”

To ensure that the movie would appeal to diverse audiences, Kim sought and incorporated advice from friends and acquaintances of all ages, backgrounds and nationalities. She showed them the movie’s screenplay and incorporated suggestions and paid careful attention to how the screenplay was translated into other languages.

The editing process alone took Kim 10 months. Kim created picture cards that represented 160 scenes in the movie, and explored placing them in different orders to create the most meaningful flow of events.

It took Kim five years to see “House of Hummingbird” in theaters - she completed the screenplay’s first draft in 2013. After studying film at Dongguk University and Columbia University, Kim had managed to secure 300 million won ($246,862) to cover production costs from places like the Korean Film Council and Sundance Festival, as well as through lecturing in university.

“I was always a bit embarrassed because I think I was really intense [in working on this movie] because I loved it so much,” Kim said.

“Some people asked me why I was trying to recreate the past when my budget was so small, but I think the work I did when trying to recreate the year 1988 for my short film ‘The Recorder Exam’ (2011) was really helpful.”

As for future plans, Kim said she wants to continue creating films that center around a female protagonist, and is even hoping to work on “war or sci-fi movies that explores an individual’s history and social context.”

“[War films and sci-fi] are resource-heavy and male-dominated genres that people don’t think women can pull off. But war movies aren’t all about the spectacle. I want to explore the ruins inside people affected by war.”
