Steelmakers cleared of overusing bleeder valves

Posco and Hyundai Steel will not have to shut down their blast furnaces.

A consultative body with members from the businesses, consumer groups and Ministry of Environment concluded Tuesday it was inevitable for steelmakers to open bleeder valves while operating their blast furnaces.

If the body had concluded otherwise, the companies were at risk of being forced to shut their steel mills for 10 days as a penalty. Local governments and consumer groups had claimed the steelmakers emitted air pollutants by unnecessarily overusing bleeder valves, which should only be opened in emergencies.
