Hip-hop contest to remember Chun

Sept 12,2019

The first Chun Tae-il Hip-hop Festival is planned to be hosted on Nov. 16 to commemorate the labor rights activist with music, Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on Wednesday.

Chun was a 22-year-old worker at a garment factory who set himself on fire to raise public awareness of the poor working conditions of factory workers on Nov. 13, 1970.

“Both Chun and hip-hop share a commonality of resistance,” said the organizers. “Through the hip-hop genre which resonates in the minds of younger generations, we hope to draw attention to Chun’s sacrifice and spirit.”

Rappers MC Meta and Analog Boy will collaborate with the Chun Tae-il Memorial Foundation to organize and host the festival.

Applicants can upload their music or video on social media under the hashtags #chuntaeilhiphopfestival and #lovemoveunity from Sept. 16 to 30 with the themes of love, movement, or unity. They can also send clips by email to chuntaeilm@naver.com

Those who are chosen will give live performances at the Chun Tae-il Memorial on Oct. 20. MC Meta, Analog Boy and Kebee will judge the first and second trial.

The final qualifiers will perform at the festival in Gwanghwamun Square in central Seoul on Nov. 16. Judges for the finals include artists Paloalto, Huckleberry and Deepflow. The rappers will also be giving special performances for the event.

In the finals, three teams will each take home a million won ($840) and will be given a chance to produce and release their own music.
