“It’s a story about people who stand back up after being knocked down in life. This is the first time my work is going on screen, and I hope it can encourage people to ponder many things.”

As the original creator behind the upcoming comedy series “Pegasus Market,” set to air on tvN from Sept. 20, cartoonist Kim Kyu-sam said he “didn’t take part in the drama production or casting at all. I think there is value in recreating [my work] from another person’s point of view.”

“Pegasus Market” is a hit web comic that attracted a total of 1.1 billion views after it was first serialized on the Naver Webtoon platform in 2010.

The story takes place in Pegasus Market, a run-down and neglected grocery store owned by conglomerate Daema Corporate Group where employees who have lost the chairman’s favor are banished.

Jung Bok-dong, who used to be one of the chairman’s most important advisers, is Daema’s most recent exile and the store’s recently appointed CEO who’s determined to use his new position to plot revenge against the conglomerate.

However, all his efforts to ruin the store end up bringing the business unprecedented profit, much to the delight of Moon Suk-goo, the ambitious store manager who’s hoping that his performance at Pegasus Market will eventually secure him a spot at Daema’s headquarters. Actors Kim Byung-chul, from “SKY Castle” (2018-19), and Lee Dong-hwi, from “Extreme Job” (2019), take on the roles of Jung and Moon.

Much of the humor in “Pegasus Market” comes from parodying aspects of Korean society. In the store, the customer service staff are dressed in royal outfits, a direct jab to the mantra “customers are king,” while Pegasus Market overpays its suppliers, when in reality, Korean conglomerates are accused of doing the exact opposite.

Social satire is Kim’s forte. In “Jungle High School” (2006-11), he poked fun at the Korean education system’s stress on grades and corruption in private schools. “Vigilante,” which Kim began serializing from last year, critiques the faults of the legal system and its failure to protect actual victims.

The JoongAng Ilbo met with veteran cartoonist Kim to learn more about “Pegasus Market.” Below are edited excerpts from the interview.

Q. Which character do you feel the most attached to?

A
. Moon Suk-goo. He’s also the first character I created for this series. Moon is actually a gentle person, but after suffering a lot in life, he begins to desire worldly success. As his eroded morals cover his good character like an egg shell, he becomes more welcoming of schemes and plots to get what he wants. But in critical situations, his good character peeks out from the shell.

More webtoons are being turned into dramas and movies, and many of them are successful like “Along with the Gods” (2017). What do you think makes webtoons such an attractive source of content?

You can create webtoons at a low cost. As long as you have imagination, you can make them at home alone and experiment a lot without worrying about costs. Since you can also assess viewer response during the creative process, it’s inevitable that webtoons developed into a popular medium.

Do you focus on sending a social message in your work?

No, I always seek to entertain. I use social satire to add fun. One of the basic elements of humor is to parody something and look at it from a different point of view. I also think messages are better sent if they come with entertainment.

There’s much debate on whether comics are art or entertainment, and I think they’re better categorized as entertainment. I don’t think of myself as an artist, but rather as a person working in the service industry to satisfy readers.

There are many people who dream of becoming webtoon creators. What’s the most important quality they need to have?

They need to have work ethic, especially the ability to stick to deadlines. There is the phrase “pain of creation.” Creating is joy, but deadlines are painful. Only people who can withstand that pain can call themselves creators.

Is there anything you want to achieve as a webtoon creator?

I want to create a Korean-style action genre. China has martial arts, Japan has Samurai sword fights, the United States has the Wild West, but we don’t have anything like that. I’m paying attention to old fables these days to find a Korean version.
