New Samsung SSD has ‘never die’ capabilities

Samsung Electronics released a new series of solid-state drives (SSD) twice as fast as existing SSDs, with “never die” capabilities and the option of allowing access for a number of users.

A solid-state drive is a non-volatile memory storage device. It contains multiple layers of NAND flash memory chips. Non-volatile means it can permanently save data even after the device is turned off, unlike DRAM semiconductors.

Samsung’s new PCIe Gen4 SSD lineup offers three new features. The most notable among them is never die, which the chipmaker says is a first in the industry.

In the past, when failure occurred in NAND chips inside an SSD, the customer had to exchange the entire drive. The crash of one single NAND chip could result in halting the entire system and paying extra for data recovery.

To prevent this, Samsung developed a “fail-in-place” technology that can detect a faulty chip, scan for faults in the data, then relocate the data to other working chips. Throughout the entire process, the SSD will continue processing data while taking care of the faulty chip.

The second is SSD virtualization technology which allows a single SSD to be subdivided into a maximum of 64 smaller SSDs. This provides independent virtual storage for multiple users. Leveraging this software, cloud storage providers can extend their services to a greater number of users with the same amount of resources.

V-NAND machine learning technology helps control voltage flow more accurately between NAND chip cells. The new technology can accurately predict and verify cell characteristics, as well as detect any variation in circuit patterns with analytics. This ensures data reliability as increasing SSD speeds pose a challenge in reading and verifying data.

Samsung started mass production of the PM1733 and PM1735, both products under the PCIe Gen4 lineup and differing in form factor. There are 19 versions of them in total that range in capacity from 0.8 to 30.72 terabytes.

“We are combining breakthrough speeds and capacities with revolutionary software solutions as we accelerate expansion in the premium SSD market,” said Kyung Kye-hyun, executive vice president of memory solution product & development at Samsung Electronics.

“We plan to introduce additional innovation led by our most advanced V-NAND in helping to trigger a lot more growth in the global IT market.”
