The 100th National Sports Festival, kicking off on Oct. 4, will also include a special program for foreign residents beginning with a three-on-three basketball competition this week.

Running over this weekend, the “2019 International Student 3 on 3 Basketball Competition” will be held at Sangmyung University’s Seoul campus. The competition is co-sponsored by the Seoul Sports Council and the Promotion Committee of International Student Basketball Competition and supervised by the Korea Sports Tourism Marketing Association.

The competition was created to promote recreational sports, especially club basketball, to international students. About a thousand international students and 100 teams are expected to participate in the tournament. By hosting this special event for international students, Seoul Sports Council hopes to promote the 100th National Sports Festival, which is being hosted by the capital.

Following an opening ceremony for the competition, the preliminary games will kick off at 11 a.m. on Saturday. Then, on Sunday, tournament rounds will begin, starting at 10 a.m. Between matches, the competition will host exhibition events such as three-point shootouts, free throw competitions and one-on-one games.

The winning team will receive 3 million won ($2,500) in prize money while the runner-up will receive 2 million won and the third place team will get 1 million won. In addition to the prize money, the top three teams will also receive trophies and certificates.

There will also be individual awards for the most outstanding player and the best leader. Also, special prizes and exhibition event awards will be given out. The special awards will be awarded for the best teamwork and the best player, while individual position awards will be given out to the best guards, centers and forwards.

“Along with the international student basketball competition becoming an opportunity to introduce Seoul to the 65,000 international students from China and around the world, I also hope that this event can become a place for international students to enjoy recreational sports,” said Charles Joung, secretary general of the Korea Sports Council.

“In addition, we’ll try hard to make the 100th National Sports Festival, which is hosted in Seoul, an enjoyable festival for the international students as well as local [sports fans].”
