Air Seoul to start service to Zhangjiajie in China

Air Seoul, the budget airline of Asiana Airlines, said Friday that it will start flying between Seoul and Zhangjiajie in China’s Hunan Province, from Oct. 16.

It will be the first direct service beween Incheon International Airport and the Chinese city.

The new route will operate Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, departing from Incheon at 12:25 p.m. and arriving in Zhangjiajie at 2:50 p.m. The return flight will leave Zhangjiajie at 3:50 p.m. and arrive in Incheon at 8:15 p.m.

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is a Unesco Heritage site and was the model for the floating mountains of Pandora in the science fiction movie “Avatar” (2009).

According to Air Seoul, travelers to Zhangjiajie currently have to travel by bus for roughly four hours to and from the nearest airport.

Korean Air, the country’s largest airline, is also launching a thrice-weekly service between Incheon and Zhangjiajie, which begins Oct. 28.

Korean airlines have been trying to find more routes to China and Southeast Asia, as travel to Japan drops off due to the diplomatic and trade spat between Seoul and Tokyo.
