WeAJa charity event in Seoul, Busan Sunday

The 15th annual WeAJa charity flea market will come to Seoul and Busan this Sunday, providing attendees a chance to buy secondhand goods and bid for items donated by top celebrities while enjoying entertainment and food on the sidelines.

The country’s largest day-long flea market has raised some 1.9 billion won ($1.6 million) since it began in 2005, with all proceeds going toward the underprivileged.

Donations by high-profile public figures and celebrities will be sold at auction, while other goods donated by companies, nonprofit organizations and individuals will be sold at fixed prices. The fair also features entertainment, including musical performances, free health consultations, quizzes and crafts.

Programs differ by city.

This year’s flea market, co-hosted by the JoongAng Ilbo, JTBC and government offices of Seoul and Busan, will be held at Gwanghwamun Square in central Seoul from 12 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and at Song Sang-hyeon Square in Busan from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Taemin, a member of the popular K-pop boy band SuperM donated a black t-shirt with the word “TAEMIN” emblazoned across the top and his black-and-white silhouette pictured below, which he also signed. Taemin said he personally wore the shirt while practicing the choreography for “Jopping,” the title of the group’s first mini album “Super M: The 1st Mini Album,” which topped the Billboard 200 albums chart on Sunday.

The item will be sold in the Seoul WeAJa auction.

Singer and actor Henry donated a green wool turtleneck sweater with a red heart and the letter “A” on one side, along with an autographed photo of himself. Other items donated by Henry include an American Eagle jean jacket he wore while filming the movie “A Dog’s Journey” (2019), a wool checkered shirt and a black wool fedora from the brand White Sands. All items except for the wool checkered shirt will be sold in the Seoul auction.

A pair of Carin sunglasses that actor and singer Suzy wore while filming the now-running Korean drama “Vagabond” will also be auctioned in Seoul, along with a black leather sunglasses case which she also autographed.

Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon donated a piece of pottery that will be sold in the Seoul auction, and Yoo Nam-seok, president of the Constitutional Court, donated a plate that was gifted by the famous Korean painter Min Kyoung-kap, which will also be sold in Seoul.

A white pair of Srixon golf shoes LPGA Hall of Famer Park In-bee wore while she practiced for last year’s Tour, in Korean size 245 or U.S. size 6.5, will also go to the highest bidder in Seoul.

Free parking will not be offered at the fairs, so participants are advised to use public transportation. Admission is free. Purchased items cannot be returned.
