Officials to start inspecting vehicle emissions levels

The government has started inspecting vehicles for fine dust emissions to combat a spike in the pollutants before the winter season.

According to the Environment Ministry, it has installed 530 checkpoints nationwide that will test the level of fine dust emissions from vehicles until Nov. 15.

Drivers who do not comply with the inspections may face a fine of up to 2 million won ($1,700), and vehicles that exceed certain emissions levels will be ordered to receive maintenance within 15 days.

Those who do not get maintenance face a driving ban of up to 10 days and a fine of 3 million won.

The government said it will focus on inspecting vehicles known for heavy emissions such as cargo trucks and buses.

The Ministry added that a total of 10 checkpoints in the capital metropolitan region, Daegu and Pohang will check emissions remotely without the drivers having to stop for inspections.

“Through strengthened inspections, we will raise awareness that vehicle emissions are a major cause of fine dust, and [we will] help reduce fine dust during winter,” said an official at the Environment Ministry. “We will also pursue limiting old diesel vehicles […] to decrease fine dust levels.”
