THE TALES OF HOFFMANN

Seoul Arts Center, Opera House

Oct. 24-27

Marking the 200th anniversary of the birth of French composer Jacques Offenbach (1819-1880), the Korea National Opera presents “Les Contes d’Hoffmann,” or “The Tales of Hoffmann.”

French director Vincent Boussard is at the helm of the performance, while Russian tenor Alexey Dolgov and Korean tenor Kook Yun-jong, also known as Oliver Kook, are double cast in the role of Hoffmann. Korean bass singer Sim In-sung will also join.

The performance starts at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 24 and 25 and at 4 p.m. on Oct. 26 and 27.

Ticket prices range from 10,000 ($8.50) to 150,000 won.

HOI RANG

Seoul Arts Center, Opera House

Nov. 6-10

The Korean National Ballet presents an original piece of its own titled “Hoi Rang,” which puts emphasis on hyo, a Korean word that describes the love and sense of duty and responsibilities felt by children toward their parents.

Set in the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), the ballet tells the story of a young woman named Rang, who happens to join the army to fight in a war on behalf of her elderly father. In order to enlist, Rang disguises herself as a man and she comes across Jung, a warrior, in the battlefield, and the two develop a bond as they defeat troops. But Jung soon realizes Rang’s identity, and she is quickly on the verge of being kicked out of the army.

The show starts at 7:30 p.m. from Wednesdays to Fridays and at 3 p.m. on weekends.

Tickets range from 30,000 won to 50,000 won.

HAN-NA CHANG & TRONDHEIM SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Nov. 13

Chief conductor and artistic leader of the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra, Han-Na Chang, will be hosting a concert alongside acclaimed pianist Dong Hyek Lim.

Although both musicians once worked for EMI Classics, this concert will be the first time that these esteemed artists will have the opportunity to perform together. Chang will be conducting the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra with Lim on the piano as they play Grieg’s “Peer Gynt Suite No. 1,” “Piano Concerto in A minor” and Tchaikovsky’s “Symphony No. 6 in B minor.”

The show starts at 8 p.m.

Tickets range from 40,000 won to 200,000 won.

FILM CONCERT: HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS

Sejong Center for the Performing Arts, Grand Theater

Nov. 16-17

Good news for Harry Potter fans - the score of the fantasy film will be performed live during two performances at the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts in central Seoul.

“Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets,” the second film in the series, will be screened in the Grand Theater while songs from the soundtrack are played by the Korea Coop Orchestra simultaneously. Since 2014, the 70-member orchestra has performed during many operas and held its first film concert - “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” - last year.

The show starts at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Nov. 16 and 17.

Tickets range from 30,000 won to 120,000 won.

Musical Aida returns in three years.

Set in ancient Egypt, the story follows a love triangle between three protagonists: Radames, the Egyptian military commander, who enslaves the people of Nubia including Aida, the princess of Nubia, and Amneris, the daughter of Pharaoh and the fiancee of Radames.

On his way home from a victory against Nubia, the long-time enemy of Egypt, Radames develops an interest in Aida, who makes her voice heard among the captives. Without knowing that Aida is the princess of Nubia, Radames sends her as a gift to Amneris. Soon after, Radames and Aida fall for each other but Aida tries to find a balance between her love for Radames and her responsibility to her people.

The musical, also known as “Elton John and Tim Rice’s Aida” is based on an opera of the same title.

Aida stars Yoon Gong-joo and Jeon Na-young as Aida; Kim Woo-hyung and Choi Jae-rim as Radames; Ivy and Jeong Sun-ah as Amneris.

Performances start at 8 p.m. on weekdays and 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on weekends.

There are no shows on Mondays.

Tickets range from 60,000 won to 140,000 won.

HONNE

Blue Square, iMarket Hall

Nov. 14

English electro-pop duo Honne is coming to Seoul as part of its Asian tour titled “Love Me / Love Me Not.”

The duo, Andy Clutterbuck and James Hatcher, debuted in 2014 with the single “Warm on a Cold Night.”

Earlier this year, the duo collaborated with RM of BTS on “Crying Over You” (2018). Honne also participated in the making of RM’s solo song “Seoul” (2018) by composing and producing the track.

The duo told Korean media that it was impressed by Korean fans who sung along to all of their songs when they first performed here in 2016.

The concert starts at 8 p.m.

Tickets cost 88,000 won.

2019 BOYZ II MEN

SK Olympic Handball Gymnasium

Dec. 14-15

Legendary R&B trio Boyz II Men will perform in Seoul, the first time since 2011.

The trio, which consists of Shawn Stockman, Wanya Morris and Nathan Morris, has won four Grammy awards and sold more than 60 million copies of albums worldwide since its debut in 1993.

In Korea, the trio also has a huge fan base with timeless hits such as “End of the Road,” “One Sweet Day” and “I Will Make Love to You.”

According to the concert organizer, the Seoul concert celebrates the 25th anniversary of the release of the trio’s second album, which contains many of the group’s biggest hit songs.

The concert starts at 8 p.m. on Dec. 14 and at 6 p.m. on Dec. 15.

Tickets range from 99,000 won to 143,000 won.
