Renault Samsung to give old batteries to LG Chem

Renault Samsung Motors and LG Chem have teamed up to develop an energy storage system using used electric car batteries, the automaker said Thursday.

The Korean unit of the French automaker Renault said it will first offer used batteries from 40 of its SM3 Z.E. electric cars to the battery maker. LG Chem will then develop and test the energy storage system made with used electric car batteries over the next two years.

An energy storage system stores power from solar panels or wind turbines for later consumption. It generally uses large number of batteries connected to each other.

The automaker said it will continue offering batteries from its other electric car models like its Twizy.

“Renault Samsung Motors has been a pioneer in expanding the electric car business in Korea,” said Lee Sang-tae, electric vehicle program director for Renault Samsung. “In 2011, we started electric car pilot projects with the Ministry of Environment and in 2013, we were the first to mass-produce electric cars in Korea.”

Lee added that this partnership with LG Chem to recycle used electric car batteries will help it further play an important role in expanding the electric car ecosystem.

According to Renault Samsung, electric car batteries are designed to withstand severe environmental conditions and are therefore very stable, which makes them good resources for energy storage system makers.

The carmaker added that the recycling program could also cut down on costs when electric car users need to change their batteries.
