This is today's anchor briefing.

“Is this thing an award? They better have not have given this thing to me!”
- DongJu; The Portrait of A Poet (2015)

Yun Dong-ju’s cousin Song Mong-gyu threw an award that he received during his graduation ceremony on the floor. Since the award was from a pro-Japanese president and the additional prize was a book that glorified Japanese militarism, it was an unwelcome award for a young man with a passionate soul.

An ‘award’ is given to someone who deserves it. Although it seems like everyone wants to receive an award, more people than expected have refused them.

“It is my duty to [refuse the award] for the hope and conscience that is being held under the cold sea”
- Actor Choi Min-soo, 57

“The mistreatment of those suffering from today's atrocities is simply not in line with my Jewish values”
-Actress Natalie Portman, 38

One actor refused an acting award by saying he couldn’t receive it due to the sorrow of the Sewol ferry tragedy. In another case, an actress refused an award that was given to honorable Jews by saying that she stands against Israel’s bomb attacks in the Gaza Strip.

By refusing the award, the message they wanted to deliver was clearly recognized by the world… The award earned a new meaning through [people who] refused it.

One more citation. According to what they said, their contribution was ‘a kind of achievement’ that led to ‘resignation of Justice Minister’. Also, they confidently said they will ‘add points for nomination’ to those who ripped the bills that were submitted to the National Assembly, started the violent brawl and confined their colleagues during the scuffle.

“It’s reasonable to give points to those who led the political resistance.”
- Rep. Na Kyung-won, the floor leader of the main opposition Liberty Korea Party

Their own ceremony created a storm of protest from the members of the party. Parliamentary politics have disappeared over the past several seasons and people’s broken hearts cannot feel comforted seeing those people who were receiving and giving awards with a smile.

I previously introduced a few people who refused honorable awards. There is another person; Thomas Piketty, who wrote the book “Capital in the Twenty-First Century,” raised an issue after he refused France’s highest civilian award Legion d'Honneur. He said this when he refused the award:

“I do not think it is the government’s role to decide who is honorable.”

To receive an award is to be recognized as an authority by one’s peers. A person who receives an award may make others feel uncomfortable, but, in contrast, they may also receive a lot of praise by refusing it.

What exactly is an award?
