Minions, the yellow, gibberish-speaking stars of the “Despicable Me” franchise, have warmed hearts and brought laughter to multitudes since their big-screen debut in 2010.

Thanks to their universal appeal, “Despicable Me” became the highest-grossing animated film franchise in box office history - its three films and one spin-off are estimated to have grossed around $3.7 billion the world over, raising around $50 million of the total from Korea alone.

Appreciating the level of interest from Korean fans, distributor Universal Pictures recently opened a massive exhibition that brings the beloved characters from the hit franchise to life.

While on a global tour, “A Minion’s Perspective” made a stop in Seoul and is now at the Insa Central Museum in Anyoung Insadong, a new cultural complex that opened last month. The show has previously been in China.

Not only is the exhibition stocked with Instagram-worthy photo spots beside larger-than-life characters, but many of the rooms are dazzling recreations of actual spaces from the movie, like Gru’s Lab, where the protagonist and supervillain hatches his mischievous plans. Behind-the-scenes content, like early sketches and interviews with creators, are on view as well.

Universal Parks & Resorts’ Michael Silver, president of global business development, and Universal-owned animation studio Illumination Vice President Claudia Mielnik attended a press briefing on Oct. 21 to celebrate the opening of “A Minion’s Perspective” in Seoul.

“Minions and the ‘Despicable Me’ series have been a worldwide phenomenon, and we wanted to give fans a richer experience,” Silver said, explaining the motive for bringing the show to Korea. Universal Studios Florida and Universal Studios Japan already offer relevant experiences, like the Despicable Me Minion Mayhem simulator ride.

“Our characters are very relatable,” Mielnik said, explaining the franchise’s popularity. “Globally, we have family and friends, and villains that we’re battling against. Minions don’t speak any one language, but we can all relate through their actions.”

The highlight of “A Minion’s Perspective” is its immersive experience. It offers plenty of interactive games inspired by the film - visitors can try to keep up with the smooth moves of dancing villain Bratt, and select ingredients to create the stinkiest concoction for Gru’s fart gun.

As the last installation of the film franchise “Despicable Me 3” was released in 2017, “A Minion’s Perspective” is expected to keep interest high in time for the upcoming 2020 release of “Minions: The Rise of Gru.”
