Daejong awards moved to 2020

The Daejong Film Awards will be held next year instead of in the fall when they are usually held, the event’s chairman Kim Gu-hoe told Yonhap on Tuesday.

In a phone interview with the news agency, Kim confirmed that the ceremony for Korea’s oldest film awards will be held in February to “renovate the awards in line with the centennial of the Korean cinema industry.”

Going forward, the film event will be held in February, according to Kim. The chairman noted that the awards’ previous timeline was impractical because it left films released after August to have to wait until the following year to be nominated.

“The Academy Awards annually select and nominate awards from films that were released from January to December of the previous year,” Kim said.

“The Daejong Film Awards will expand the period as well so we can evaluate last year’s films [properly].”

Due to the change, the 56th Daejong Film Awards will assess films released from September 2018 to this December. The the 57th Daejong Film Awards will be given to films released from January to December 2020.
