Hyundai Motor to build Santa Cruz in Alabama

Hyundai Motor said Thursday that the Santa Cruz, its first pick-up truck, will be built at the carmaker’s U.S. automotive assembly plant in Montgomery, Alabama, from 2021.

The Santa Fe SUV as well as the Sonata and Elantra sedans are already being produced at the Alabama plant.

The company said it will inject $410 million in to expanding the plant to support production of the Santa Cruz. Hyundai is expecting direct employment to increase by 200 jobs and local suppliers and logistics companies to employ an additional 1,000 people in the region for the new vehicle production.

The Santa Cruz was first introduced as a concept at the 2015 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
