Cinematheque Seoul delayed again

The completion of the building of the Cinematheque Seoul, Chungmuro, has been delayed to March 2022, pushed back from its original estimated completion date of August 2021, the Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on Wednesday.

The government decided that it needed more time to prepare and increased the budget from 22.4 billion won ($19.1 million) to 26.5 billion won.

“We took heed to expert opinions, which in turn influenced the [completion] date as we needed more time to revise the building plan,” said the government. “That led to a need for additional budget and we also took in consideration the increased size of the construction site.”

In the revised version, the building’s lobby was changed to create more open space and the theaters were designed to be more soundproof. Construction is set to begin next month.

The complex will consist of three ground floors and 10 stories, featuring a total of 234 theaters, theater libraries, preservation rooms and an outdoor theater on the rooftop.

Cinematheque will be situated between Chungmuro and Euljiro 3-ga station, line No. 3. The government first announced their plans for the building in March 2015, wanting to build a hub for Korean film equivalent to “La Cinematheque francaise” in Paris.

But after being rejected twice by the administration’s central investment committee, their plans were delayed until the project was finally accepted on the local government’s third attempt.
