Elsa and Anna dominate at local box office

“Frozen 2” thawed the icy local box office as it flew straight to the top over the weekend.

The Disney film gathered 3.8 million moviegoers in 2,648 screens, according to the Korean Film Council. The film, since its release on Thursday, has already topped 4.4 million ticket sales, giving statistical proof of how much fans have been anticipating the return of Elsa and Anna.

Set three years after the coronation of Queen Elsa, the kingdom of Arendelle is at peace.

Elsa seems to be in more control of her powers, and the two sisters have grown closer than ever over the years.

However, when Elsa unintentionally awakens the elemental spirits with her powers while following a call from a mysterious voice, she, Anna, Olaf, Kristoff and Sven must once again set off on another adventure to discover the truth about Arendelle’s past and, on the way, about the origin of Elsa’s powers.

The debut of such a highly anticipated film has once again raised controversy over its dominance of screens at chain theaters, causing smaller or independent films to lose their place at the local box office.

While “Frozen 2” monopolizes over 2,600 screenings, the number of other films’ screens has unmistakably shrunk compared to last week.

“Black Money,” stepped down from its one-week reign, selling 362,000 tickets across 856 screens.

The film’s plot is based on a real stock market fraud case between Lone Star, a U.S. private equity fund, and local prosecutors, financial authorities and institutions between 2003 and 2011.

Despite being cast aside after “Frozen 2” hit local theaters, the film managed to reach its break-even point of 1.7 million ticket sales as of Saturday afternoon, a feat reached in 12 days since its release on Nov. 13.

Audiences complimented the film’s sharp message and spotlight of one of the biggest financial scandals in local history, adding that the fast-paced development of the story kept the movie interesting enough for the audience to follow.

“The Divine Move 2: The Wrathful” shuffled down to third place, with 95,000 moviegoers seeing the film across 650 screens.

Two female-lead films, “Kim Ji Young, Born 1982” and “Terminator: Dark Fate” landed in fourth and fifth place for the weekend.

A total of 48,000 headed to the cinema to see “Kim Ji Young, Born 1982” across 464 screens, while 23,000 people saw “Terminator: Dark Fate” across 193 screens.
