Lee Seung-gi jumps right in: Fresh off his role in the hit action series “Vagabond,” the star is ready for more

The action-packed production cost 25 billion won ($21 million) to make and had Lee doing more than 80 percent of his stunts by himself. Throughout the 16-episode series, Lee’s character Cha Dal-geon runs, rolls and jumps while searching for the truth behind a plane crash that killed his nephew, fighting off unknown powers and later finding out that he himself is embroiled in a tangled web of corruption.
“[Doing the action scenes] is physically daunting but addictive at the same time. At one point, I felt like quitting, but when I saw the outcome, I was thankful that I didn’t.
“This genre costs a lot, but it definitely gives you a lot to see.”
It has already been two years since Lee was discharged from his mandatory military service. That day, Lee promised his fans that he would “work until the day his fans told him to stop working.”
Over the past two years, Lee has worked on a film and three TV shows, plus “Vagabond.”
Ilgan Sports, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily, recently caught up with Lee to talk about his life as an action star and his goals for the future. The following are edited excerpts from the interview.
In the recently-wrapped drama series “Vagabond,” Lee, left, plays Cha Dal-geon, a man who is searching for answers after losing his nephew after a plane crash. [SBS]
A. I had mixed feelings about the show. I was concerned about how it would be received by viewers. I’m so happy that the drama got great feedback. It turned out really good, and I’m happy with it.
What was it like to work with an entirely new cast and crew for this show?
Everything was good. The chemistry between the actors was good, but I especially appreciate director Yu In-sik for becoming a good leader. Nobody complained during the production thanks to his leadership.
You shot some of the show in Morocco. How was that experience?
I wasn’t that close with the other actors before we all went to Morocco. We were only able to drink alcohol inside the hotel [in Morocco], and that made us pretty close because we got together in each other’s hotel rooms to drink at the end of each day of filming.
I was able to stay focused on the filming because everything went so smoothly while we were there. A lot of Hollywood movies are shot in Morocco, so it was quite a supportive filming environment. Everything was far better than I imagined.
The ending of “Vagabond” is quite open-ended. Is there a possibility for a second season?
I’m also curious about whether they will work on a second season. When dramas are produced by seasons, they don’t have to spend time introducing characters and their relationships in the beginning. As far as I know, nothing is being discussed in detail yet.
What was it like working on all of those action scenes?
I desperately hoped that I could finish the drama without getting hurt. I began learning how to shoot action scenes with other actors two months before filming began. I had my own stuntman, but I did more than 80 percent of the action scenes myself. There is a huge difference between action scenes done by actors and scenes by stuntmen. When I do the scenes by myself, it adds more thrill and tension to the story.
What was the most difficult scene for you?
The running scenes were so hard. For one scene, I had to run on the roof of a building for 50 meters (164 feet). The director needed various angles of that run, so I ran those 50 meters with all my strength eight different times.
Are you happy with the series overall?
I wanted to work on a project that I could take pride in. A lot of dramas promote themselves as action, but the action scenes disappear when they reach the fourth or fifth episodes and it suddenly becomes a romance. But “Vagabond” was not like that.
Plus, because the dramas were available on Netflix, I felt like the whole world was watching us. When Koreans watch quality TV shows, they often say ‘Oh! It’s like an American drama series.’ After this show, I want to hear people saying ‘This looks like Vagabond’ when they see other good dramas.
“Vagabond” was especially popular overseas. What was that like for you?
I went to fan meeting events across Asia around the time when the sixth episode came out. Everyone started calling me Cha Dal-geon. I was surprised by how the platform can reach such a global audience.
You served in a Special Forces unit in the army. Was that experience helpful for you while playing this character?
I did all of the possible training programs when I was in the Army. Over the course of many hours of marching and marine training, I gained confidence. I learned a lot from people who were mentally and physically strong while working on this drama series.
Last year, you received the Grand Prize at the SBS Entertainment Awards. Are you aiming for another grand prize at the year-end drama awards?
I honestly don’t expect to get one at all.
Do you have any plans to release an album anytime soon?
I do have a plan. But I will tell you more details later because nothing has been decided [regarding the release of the album.] I want to release an album, not a single. I want it to be an album that has my thoughts and feelings in it.
Can we expect you to write and produce some of the songs?
I know who I am. There are a lot of people who are good at writing songs out there. I don’t think I can write a song. The best thing I can do is contact the talented people and get songs from them.
What are your concerns these days?
I’m trying not to be perfect. I think I’m responsible, but I find myself putting a lot of effort into one project and then later I am overwhelmed. I know what I have to do deep down in my mind: Trust the people I work with and follow them. But I always try too hard. I’m trying to get rid of that way of thinking.
What are your goals for the future?
I want to approach and discover each area [from acting to singing] in depth. I could energetically do it all in my 20s, but I want to be more skilled in all those fields and show better sides of me.

로맨스·멜로에 액션까지 해냈다.
이승기(32)는 SBS 드라마 '배가본드'의 막대한 제작비와 스케일 등 부담감이 심했을 듯 하지만 잘 이겨냈다. 90% 이상을 본인이 액션신을 소화하는 등 배우로서 스펙트럼을 넓히는데 성공했다. 단순히 주먹을 휘두르는 액션이 아닌 뛰고 구르는 등 정말 '생고생'이었다.
2년 전 전역 자리에서 "팬들이 그만 나오라고 할 때까지 활동하겠다'고 말한 그의 2년 행보를 돌이켜보니 약속을 찰떡같이 지켰다.
극 중 조카의 죽음에 얽힌 음모와 진실을 파헤치려 거침없이 질주하는 스턴트맨 출신 차달건 역으로 열연한 이승기. 그는 "체력적 부담이 만만치 않았다. 이게 중독성이 있는 것일 수도 있는데, 너무 힘들어 그만둘까 싶다가도 영상을 보면 ‘하길 잘했다’고 한다. 시각적 효과가 멋진 장르는 투자를 많이 해야 하는 반면, 보는 재미는 확실히 있는 것 같다"고 높은 만족도를 전했다.
-드라마가 끝났다.
"오랜 시간 촬영했고 그로인해 기대반 우려반이었다. 방송이 되고 좋은 평가를 들었고 좋은 분위기 속 마지막 방송을 볼 수 있어 기쁘다. 잘 만든 콘텐츠로 남을 수 있어 만족스럽다."
-배우들과 호흡이 유독 좋아보였다.
"정말 화기애애했다. 배우들간의 합도 좋았지만 이끌어준 유인식 감독님 덕도 크다. 누구하나 불평없이 좋은 팀워크로 잘 이끌고 가 무사히 마쳤다."
-원래 배우들간 친분이 있었나.
"사실 모로코 가기 전까지 이렇게 친하진 않았다. 모로코에 갔는데 호텔에서만 술을 마실 수 있어 모두들 촬영이 끝나면 방에 모여 술을 마셨다. 누가 약속을 정하지 않더라도 하나둘 모여 있다. 데면데면하다가 급격히 친해졌고 그 기운이 서울까지 이어졌다."
-모로코 촬영 중 힘든 점은 없었나.
"정말 힘든게 별로 없었다. 아무 생각없이 촬영에만 집중할 수 있었다. 모로코가 할리우드 영화 촬영지로도 유명해 장비나 제반 시설 협조가 잘 돼 있다. 그래서 생각했던 것 이상으로 좋았다. 모로코로 또 촬영가고 싶을 정도로 좋았다."
-열린 결말이었다. 시즌2에 대한 궁금증이 크다.
"제작이 된다면 나 역시 궁금하다. 시즌제의 장정이라면 일반적인 작품은 초반에 인물소개나 관계 등 복선을 깔고 시작하기 마련인데 시즌제는 그런 과정이 생략된다는 점이다. 내부적으로 이런 저런 이야기가 오고 가긴 했지만 구체적으로 나온 이야기는 없다."
-액션신이 많았는데 힘들지 않았나.
"작은 액션신이 없었다. 제발 안 다치고 무사히 끝나기만 바랐다. 촬영 전 두 달간 배우들과 꼬박 액션을 배웠다. 대역을 해주는 사람도 있었는데. 80% 이상은 내가 했다. 몇 번 촬영하다보니 배우가 직접 해주고 안 해주고의 차이가 크더라. 배우가 소화하지 않으면 어디서 본 듯한 액션이 나올 수 밖에 없었다. 배우가 직접해야 긴장감이 생기고 전체적인 긴박감이 느껴졌다."
-다친데는 없었나.
"다행히 크게 다친 곳은 없었다."
-가장 힘들었던 액션신은 꼽자면.
"뛰는 신이 정말 힘들었다. 사전에 여덟번까진 뛸 수 있다고 말을 했다. 옥상에서 뛰는데 거리가 꽤 된다. 전력으로 50m를 여덟번 뛰었다고 보면 된다. 각도에 따라 달리 보여야해 여러차례 뛸 수 밖에 없었고 바닥에 뒹구는 장면도 유독 많았다."
-실제 차달건과 비슷한 점은.
"평소 화를 많이 내지 않는다.(웃음) 성격이 급한건 조금 비슷하다."
-작품에 만족하나.
"부끄럽지 않은 작품을 만들고 싶었다. 장르를 액션이라고 해놓고 4-5회 지나가면 액션이 사라지고 멜로가 되는 게 많았다. '배가본드'는 아니었다. 우리는 넷플릭스라는 플랫폼도 있어 전세계서 지켜본다고 생각했다. 우리나라 드라마의 좋은 가이드라인을 제시했다고 느낀다. 우리도 퀄리티 좋은 작품을 보면 '미드 같다'는 표현을 쓰지 않냐. 누군가에게 한국드라마라면 '배가본드'같지 않냐는 말을 듣고 싶다. 만족스러웠다."
-주변 반응은 어땠나.
"이승기를 안 좋아했는데 '배가본드'보고 차달건이 멋있고 이승기가 좋아졌다는 반응이 좋았다. 나에게 아예 관심이 없던 사람들에게 호기심을 자극한건 큰 수확이었다."
-해외 반응이 특히 좋았다.
"아시아 팬미팅을 갔는데 당시 '배가본드' 6회 정도 방송됐을 때였는데 모두가 '차달건'으로 부르더라. 너무 신기했다. 세계적으로 나가는 플랫폼의 힘이 크다는걸 느꼈다."
-특전사로 복무한 것도 도움이 됐나.
"복무하던 시절 모든 훈련을 다 했다. 마지막 천리행군과 해상 훈련까지 하면서 신체적 자신감이 늘었다. 체력적으로 훌륭한 요원들과 함께 했고 정신력 강한 사람들과 있으니 보고 배우는게 많았고 이번 촬영 때도 좋은 기운을 유지할 수 있었다."
-키스신도 있었다.
"액션극인데 키스신이 폭발적인 반응을 얻어서 혼란스러웠다.(웃음) 액션만이 아닌 그런 것도 보고 싶었나보다."
-지난해 연예대상을 받았고 올해는 연기대상을 노릴만한데.
"전혀 기대하고 싶지 않다. 정말 욕심을 내고 있지 않다. 오히려 연예대상이 덜 부담스럽다."
-앨범 계획은 있나.
"계획은 있어 구상도 하고 있다. 구체적인 일정을 시작을 한 건 아니라 나중에 말씀드리고 싶다. 팬들도 오래 기다렸다. 이른 시점에 말하면 기다리는 시간이 길어질까봐 말을 아끼겠다. 싱글이 아닌 앨범을 내고 싶다. 정규는 아니더라도 미니앨범을 구상하고 있다. 내 생각과 삶의 느낌을 주는 앨범을 만들고 싶다."
-곡 작업도 하나.
"나는 내 자신을 잘 안다. 좋은 곡을 쓰는 사람이 많은데 내가 작곡하는건 아니다. 재능있는 분을 접촉해 곡을 받는게 최선이다."
-참 다재다능하다.
"한 분야에 몰입하고 싶을 때도 있다. 그러나 하나를 하기 위해서 다른 걸 관두기에는 너무 많은 걸 해왔다. 고맙게도 아직은 예능·드라마에서 찾아주는 사람이 많다. 하나를 선택하긴 어렵다. 이젠 노하우도 쌓여 괜찮다."
-'신서유기' 합류 생각은 없나.
"'신서유기'를 왜 안 하냐고 많이 물어보는데 어떤 형태가 되더라도 다시 한 번 뭉쳐보고 싶다. '신서유기' 오리지널 멤버라고 하지만 입대하면서 하차했고 전역 후 '신서유기'는 더 좋은 사람들이 출연해 다른 색깔로 자리잡았다."
-나영석 PD와 연락은 하나.
"요즘 유튜브로 '1박 2일'을 잘 보고 있다는 말을 종종 듣는데 너무 기분이 좋다. 나 역시도 다시 보고 싶다. 어떤 형태가 될 지는 모르겠지만 꼭 한 번 무언갈 했으면 좋겠고 (나)영석PD가 연락을 주지 않을까 싶다."
-고민이 있나.
"너무 잘하지 않으려는 노력을 많이 하고 있다. 모든 프로그램을 할 때 지나친 책임감일 수도 있고 예전부터 가져온 자세인데 잘하고자 욕심을 내다보니 너무 힘이 들어간다. 다 잘하고 싶고 다 책임지고 싶고 그런 압박이 나중엔 버겁더라. 같이 하는 사람 모두를 믿고 따르면 되는데 혼자 지나치게 잘하려고 해 욕심을 버리려고 한다."
-목표가 있나
"한 분야 한 분야 진지하고 깊이있게 공부하고 싶다. 20대땐 넘치는 에너지로 모든 걸 커버했다면 지금은 그렇기 보단 실력적으로 업그레이드된 모습을 보여주고 싶다."
