JTI Korea resolves 3-year fight with workers

Japan Tobacco International’s (JTI) Korean arm has ended a three-year dispute with its labor union over issues including wages, working conditions and support.

JTI Korea announced the deal on Monday, emphasizing that the agreement was made despite the struggling tobacco industry and the continuous anti-Japanese sentiment in Korea.

JTI Korea said the agreement between labor and management has been reached and a signing ceremony to cement the new agreement was held at its headquarters in central Seoul on Monday.

Key agreements included signing a long-term wage agreement with guaranteed wage increases that exceed inflation rates until 2021, paying for employees’ children’s education from kindergarten to university and improving working conditions without cutting staff.

“We have listened to and communicated openly with employees to resolve the labor-management dispute while continuing sincere talks with the labor union with the support of the Korea Federation of Food Industry Workers’ Union and the Ministry of Employment and Labor,” said Jose Luis Amador, general manager of JTI Korea.

“This is the result of all of us working together. I am encouraged by the fact that we will explore the future together without a reduction in the number of employees. We will now move forward to deliver our promising vision for JTI Korea.”
