Pengsoo will ring the Bosingak bell

Pengsoo, the popular EBS penguin character, has been selected as one of the 11 figures that will ring in the new year bell at central Seoul’s Bosingak pavilion, the city government of Seoul announced Thursday.

“Pengsoo was the top recommended figure to strike the New Year’s bell by citizens of Seoul,” Seoul Metropolitan Government said in its statement. “Alongside him will be Lee Soo-jung, professor of criminal psychology at Kyonggi University in Seoul, who was recently also selected as one of the BBC’s of Top 100 women of the year.”

The 11 figures were selected for their contributions to Korea and Seoul. Others include gold medalist in bowling at the 100th National Sports Festival Shin Da-eun, IT venture expert Han Byung-joon, start-up entrepreneur Park Mi-kyung, lawyer Kim Dong-hyun and European Union Ambassador to Korea Michael Reiterer.

Every year the Seoul Metropolitan Government selects a number of figures to strike the bell in Jongno District, central Seoul, with the mayor, the head of the Seoul Metropolitan Council, the superintendent of education in Seoul, the head of Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency and the mayor of Jongno District.

Pengsoo debuted in April on the “Tok! Tok! Boni, Hani” children’s program. The character simultaneously started a YouTube channel titled “Giant PengTV.” Known for having an outspoken personality, the giant penguin has become a hit among young adults.
