Park Na-rae wins MBC’s grand prize

Dec 31,2019
Comedian and host of MBC TV shows, “I Live Alone” and “Where is My Home,” Park Na-rae took home the grand prize at the MBC Entertainment Awards on Sunday.

It was the third time she was nominated for the prize and the first time she was named the winner.

“I have to say, I am only human, and I really, really wanted this prize,” she said while accepting the award, overcome with emotions.

“I was nominated alongside great artists that I respect and adore, like Lee Young-ja, Yoo Jae-suk and [Jun] Hyun-moo, who were all so encouraging in telling me that they would like to see me win the prize.”

Park is viewed as a female entertainer who is charting a new path in Korea. Her stand-up special touching on sex, relationships and celebrity life, “Park Na-rae: Glamour Warning,” was released on Netflix in October and has been praised for pushing the envelope for what female comedians can make jokes about.

She didn’t fail to make the audience laugh while standing on stage at the awards ceremony.

“I am a small person,” she said. “I mean, I only stand 148 centimeters [58 inches] high. I usually talk into people’s nostrils. It’s definitely a change as I stand here - I can tell what the top of your heads look like.”

Park debuted as a comedian on KBS in 2006. Born in Mokpo, South Jeolla, in 1985, Park is said to have dreamed of becoming an actor since her childhood.

She attended a local arts high school but had to leave school after her father died, forcing her to become one of the main breadwinners of her family.
