Surveillance body formed for Samsung Electronics

Samsung Electronics is establishing an internal surveillance body to monitor compliance and check for legal violations by company executives, the company confirmed Thursday.

“Former Supreme Court Justice Kim Ji-hyung was chosen as the committee head, and other details are still in the making,” said a company spokesman.

Industry insiders see the establishment of the committee as an attempt to mitigate risks following an influence-peddling scandal involving the Samsung group during the Park Geun-hye administration.

In the long-running court trial, a judge at the Seoul High Court demanded in October that Samsung build an internal system to ensure that the group and its leaders follow relevant laws, regulations and business rules.

Kim, who currently serves as a managing partner at Jipyong, a law firm, has delivered many rulings related to labor law, fair trade, intellectual property and taxes.

A spokesperson at Jipyong said that Kim will maintain the position at the law firm while taking on the role as the head of the surveillance committee.

“Kim will double as the head of the body,” the spokesperson said, adding that the former judge will hold a press conference next Thursday to detail the role.

He previously worked with the company when he headed a committee that dealt with compensation for victims of work-related diseases at Samsung Electronics chip and display production lines.

In 2017, he was appointed as chairperson of a state-commissioned public debate committee on the suspended construction of nuclear reactors Shin Kori 5 and 6.

Kim is currently serving as the head of a committee at the presidential office to spearhead regulatory reforms.
