About 13 years ago today (Dec. 26), Korea’s first astronaut candidates Koh San and Yi So-yeon were front-page news on most newspapers across the country. With the news that Korea’s first astronaut candidates had been nominated, the first thing we thought was ‘someday we might…’ However, it didn’t end well. We lost all our hopes in just a few years and space became a place far away once again.

과학을 전공한 SF작가 김초엽은 작품을 통해서 질문을 던졌습니다. 바로 곁에서 살아가는 이들의 말조차 귀 기울이지 않는 반면에, 또다시 새로운 누군가와 소통하기 위해서 수많은 비용과 노력을 낭비하고 있는 것은 아이러니다, 하는 것이죠.
Writer Kim Cho-yeop, who studied science as an undergraduate, threw this question in her novel. What she is trying to say is this: it is ironic that people waste a lot of money and effort to communicate with new people even when they don’t even try to listen to those right next to them.

한국어로도 녹음이 되어 있는 보이저호의 실린 지구인의 인사말. 그러나 천문학자들에 따르면 그 메시지가 실제로 외계생명체에 닿을 확률은 매우 희박합니다. 그것은 오히려, 오늘을 사는 우리, 지구인 스스로를 향해 존재해야 한다는 의미였습니다.
The Korean greeting that was included in Voyager spacecraft. But, according to astronomers, there is only an infinitesimal chance that the plaque will ever be seen by a single extraterrestrial. The message was rather for us, saying that we have to exist just for ourselves.

끊임없이 새로운 영역을 꿈꾸고 소망하지만, 우리가 우주를 향하여 어차피 '빛의 속도로 갈 수 없는 것'이라면… 먼저 나의 옆 사람에게 당도하라는… 그것이 없다면 우리의 삶은 얼마나 피폐한 것인가… 13년 전의 떠들썩함이 이만큼이나 허무한 것처럼 말입니다.
Although we constantly desire and hope for new life, if we can’t go at the speed of light…we should reach the people next to us first… Our lives become impoverished without it… Just as the tumultuous time 13 years ago turned out to be nothing.
