Waltzing into 2020 with the Vienna Philharmonic: The orchestra’s annual concert attracts a crowd from all around the world

First held in 1939, the Vienna New Year’s Concert has been staged annually, except for 1940, and is one of the most popular classical concerts in the world, so securing a seat for the show is no easy task.
The concert begins at 11:15 a.m. on the first day of the new year and lasts for about two hours. It is also broadcast live to 90 countries.
What makes the whole world enthusiastic about the New Year’s concert held in Vienna?
The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra lived up to its reputation by playing a wide repertoire.
The orchestra opened the first part of the concert with Carl Michael Ziehrer’s “The Vagabonds Overture,” while the second part began with Franz von Suppe’s “Light Cavalry Overture.”
Even for those who have little knowledge of classical music, “Light Cavalry Overture” sounds so familiar, especially to Koreans because the music was often used as background music for sports day at public schools.
But it sounded new and different this time. The music was overwhelming enough to captivate the audience. When the music reached its end, a thunderous applause and even roars erupted from the audience.
The orchestra soon began playing music from the Strauss family. It is a long-held tradition of the concert to dedicate itself to the music of the family that is rooted in Vienna.
Josef Strauss’s “Cupido-Polka francaise (Op. 81),” also known as “Cupido,” filled the concert hall. Just like its title “Cupido,” it was lovable and bouncy dance music.
The waltz Op. 443 titled “Be Embraced, You Millions!” composed by Johann Strauss II, followed.
Strauss II is well known for “The Blue Danube” among Korean classical music aficionados. He is the older brother of Josef.
The music rushed to its highlights boldly and passionately, but it also put the audience at ease at some points.

Being one of the oldest orchestras in the world, the 178-year-old Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra easily and flawlessly played all the pieces under the baton of Andris Nelsons.
The 41-year-old conductor, who made his Vienna New Year’s Concert debut this year, guided the orchestra throughout the concert energetically.
Unlike other orchestras that have permanent conductors, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra only hires guest conductors. It is said that the members of the orchestra are independent and have high self-confidence, so they go without permanent conductors most of the time.
The orchestra and Nelsons, however, made great teamwork that day.
Music columnist Lim Jeong-bin, who saw the concert in person, said “It truly lives up to its reputation.”
He’s been watching the concert through live broadcasts over the years, but he came all the way from Seoul to watch the concert this year for the first time.
“It is more like a festival rather than being a serious music concert,” said Lim.
“Initially, it was a concert playing upbeat dance music of the Strauss family, but the music of the Strauss goes well with positive and hopeful vibes for the new year, and it has settled down as a New Year’s concert.
“Adding to the Strauss family, music of other contemporaries, whether they are archrivals or peer musicians [of the family], are added such as von Suppe and Joseph Hellmesberger Jr. Like you saw from the concert today, the repertoire is made up of fast-paced polka, slow waltzes and march music so that anyone can easily enjoy the concert,” Lim added.
He continued, “Vienna is considered the heart of the world’s classical music. Three maestros of the classical period - Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven - used to be based in Vienna, while many more major figures in music history used to perform around Vienna in their heydays. In addition, each member of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra is skillful enough to perform as a soloist. It is so difficult to get into the orchestra that originated from the court orchestra of the Habsburg Monarchy.”
The stellar roster of conductors is another highlight of the annual concert.
Starting with Clemens Krauss, who took the helm of the orchestra until 1954, the orchestra has been conducted by big names in the classical music world, including Willi Boskovsky, who presided over the orchestra until 1979, and Lorin Maazel, famous for his expressive conducting until 1986.
Other virtuosos Herbert von Karajan, Claudio Abbado, Zubin Mehta and Daniel Barenboim were guest conductors for the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.
In recent years, rising stars have been hired by the orchestra, and Nelsons is one of them.
Born into a family of musicians in Latvia, he is currently serving two titles: one as a music director at the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the other as a conductor or Kapellmeister at the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra in Germany.
Unlike other conductors who majored in piano or violin, Nelsons majored in trumpet.
His unique background spiced up the New Year’s concert.
At one point, Nelsons stepped away from his podium, played the trumpet and conducted while the orchestra played Hans Christian Lumbye’s “Postillion Galop.”
Providing a surprise to the audience is a tradition of the Vienna New Year’s Concert.
The special performance by Nelsons was also seen as an homage to the Vorgeiger, an old tradition of conducting while holding a violin in one hand. The Strauss family and conductor Willi Boskovsky used to hold concerts together that way.
Lim said, “It is an achievement for a conductor who studied the trumpet to take the podium at such a young age. A conductor is a person who leads a whole pack of people, and Nelsons did it well by delivering his positive and powerful energy to the orchestra.”
Watching concertgoers and their outfits is as fun as enjoying music at the concert because the venue brims with people from all walks of life clad in fancy outfits.
Since the New Year’s concert in Vienna is especially popular in Japan, many Japanese wearing kimono frequently make appearances during live broadcasts. This year, some audience members wearing hanbok or traditional Korean clothing were spotted by cameras. Before and after the show, some audience members approached them to ask to take photos together.
Many V.I.P. guests also flocked to Vienna for the concert, and one of them was former United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and his wife.
Ban visited Vienna as a patron, a kind of cultural ambassador, to the music concert and sat next to Heinz Fischer, the former president of Austria, another patron for the annual concert.
When asked about his relationship with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, Ban said, “I used to be an ambassador to Austria [between 1998 and 2000]. I’m personally interested in diplomatic relations through music, so I launched the Korean-Austrian Philharmonic Orchestra when I was serving as the ambassador, and it performed here at the Golden Hall in 2018 to commemorate its 20th anniversary.
“Now I’m in charge of the Ethics Commission at [the International Olympic Committee], I realize sports and music play major roles in enhancing peace and promoting mutual understanding between countries,” said Ban.
At the end of the two-hour concert, the orchestra played “The Blue Danube” composed by Johann Strauss II and “Radetzky March,” written by Johann’s father Johann Strauss I, as final encores. The concert always wraps up with the two encore performances.
Another tradition is that the whole audience claps along to the march while wishing for another hopeful year.

웅장하게 경쾌하게…빈 신년음악회의 ‘심쿵’한 희망에 열광하다
오스트리아 빈의 무지크페라인 황금홀은 시립공원에서 공수된 싱싱한 꽃들로 화사했다. 1939년부터 매년(1940년 제외) 열리고 있는 빈 신년음악회는 티켓 구하기가 하늘의 별따기일 정도로 전 세계에서 가장 인기 있는 클래식 연주회다. 해마다 1월 1일 오전 11시 15분에 시작해 두 시간 남짓 진행되는 동안 90여개 국에 실황중계된다. 왜 세계인은 빈 신년음악회에 이토록 열광하는 것일까.
빈 필하모닉 오케스트라가 제 2부 첫 곡으로 연주한 것은 프란츠 폰 주페의 ‘경기병 서곡’. 클래식을 모르는 사람도 학교 운동회에서 한 번쯤 들어봤을 익숙한 곡이다. 그런데 지금까지 알던 곡이 아니었다. 이렇게 사람을 휘어잡는 곡이었나 싶을 정도로 웅장하고 또 경쾌했다. 곡이 끝나자 관람석에서 박수는 물론 함성까지 터져 나온 이유다.
그 뒤로 빈 신년음악회의 주인공 격인 슈트라우스 가문의 음악이 이어졌다. 요제프 슈트라우스의 ‘프랑스 폴카 op.81’는 ‘쿠피도(큐피드)’라는 제목에 걸맞게 사랑스럽게 통통 튀는 춤곡이었다. 다음으로 그의 형이자 ‘아름답고 푸른 도나우’로 우리에게 유명한 요한 슈트라우스 2세의 ‘왈츠 op.443 포옹을 받아라, 만인이여’가 연주됐다. 변화무쌍하게 굽이치면서도 평화로운 물의 흐름 같은 연주를 듣고 있으니 제목처럼 그 흐름에 안겨 같이 떠다니고 싶었다. 세계 최고의 오케스트라 중 하나로 꼽히는 178년 역사의 빈 필은 이 모든 것을 수월하게, 그러나 한 치의 흐트러짐도 없이 연주했다. 빈 신년음악회에서 지휘봉을 잡는 것은 처음인 41세의 안드리스 넬손스는, 상임지휘자를 두지 않을 정도로 독립성과 자존심이 강한 빈 필 단원들을, 유쾌하고 역동적으로 이끌어나갔다.
빈 신년음악회를 실황중계로만 보아오다가 올해 처음 참관한 임정빈 클래식음악 칼럼니스트는 “과연 명불허전”이라며 인기 이유를 이렇게 설명했다.
“우선 진지한 연주회라기보다 축제에 가깝다. 본래는 빈이 낳은 요한 슈트라우스 2세를 비롯한 슈트라우스 가문의 경쾌한 춤곡을 묶어 연주하던 콘서트였는데, 새해의 들뜨고 희망찬 분위기와 잘 맞아 신년 음악회로 정착된 것이다. 여기에 슈트라우스 가문의 라이벌이나 동료였던 동시대 음악가들, 즉 오늘 제1부 첫 곡인 ‘방랑자 서곡’의 칼 미하엘 치러, ‘경기병 서곡’의 주페, 헬메스베르거 2세 등이 더해졌다. 오늘 레퍼토리애서 보셨듯 빠른 폴카와 느린 왈츠, 행진곡 등을 적절히 섞어 마니아가 아닌 사람들도 쉽게 즐길 수 있다.
빈은 전 세계 클래식 음악의 심장으로 여겨진다. 고전주의 음악의 3대 거장인 하이든, 모차르트, 베토벤을 비롯해 음악사의 많은 주요 인물들이 빈을 중심으로 활동했다. 게다가 합스부르크 왕가의 궁정 오케스트라가 그 기원인 빈 필하모닉은 입단이 가장 까다로운 곳으로 단원 하나 하나가 솔리스트급 실력의 보유자들이다. 그리고 무지크페라인 황금홀은 공간 대부분이 나무로 되어있어서 음장감이 길기로 유명하다. 아까 주페의 ‘경기병 서곡’에서 금관악기 소리에 깜짝 놀랐는데, 쇳소리가 전혀 안 나고 마치 목관악기 같은 소리가 나더라. 이건 탁월한 연주와 좋은 공간이 맞물린 결과다. 이 모든 것들이 빈 신년음악회를 선망의 대상으로 만드는 것이다.”
또 다른 관전 포인트는 스타 지휘자다. 1954년까지 지휘를 맡은 클레멘스 크라우스, 이후 79년까지 빈 필 악장으로서 신년음악회 지휘를 겸했던 빌리 보스코프스키, 그다음 86년까지 실력 못지 않게 쇼맨십도 현란했던 로린 마젤, 그 후 매년 바뀐 지휘자 중에는 (몇 년 후 다시 하기도 한다) 헤르베르트 폰 카라얀, 클라우디오 아바도, 주빈 메타, 리카르도 무티, 다니엘 바렌보임 같은 기라성이 역사를 장식하고 있다. 최근에는 차세대 지휘자들이 기용되는 추세인데, 그중 하나가 올해의 주인공인 넬손스다.
라트비아의 음악가 집안에서 태어나 현재 보스턴 심포니 오케스트라의 음악 감독이자 라이프치히 게반트하우스의 카펠마이스터인 넬손스는 특이하게도 트럼펫 연주자 출신이다(대부분의 지휘자는 피아노, 다음으로 바이올린을 전공한다). 그는 ‘스칸디나비아의 슈트라우스’라 불리는 한스 크리스티안 룸비의 빠른 춤곡 ‘포스티용 갈롭’을 연주할 때 직접 트럼펫을 들고 나와 불면서 지휘를 했다. 이것은 빈 신년음악회에 하나씩 있는 깜짝 이벤트의 전통인 동시에 슈트라우스 가문과 보스코프스키가 바이올린을 연주하며 지휘를 했던 ‘포어가이거(Vorgeiger)’ 방식의 오마주일 것이다.
임 칼럼니스트는 “트럼펫 전공으로서, 또 이렇게 젊은 나이에 빈 필 포디움에 섰다는 것은 대단한 일”이라며 “지휘라는 것은 사람을 연주하는 것인데, 넬손스는 유쾌하고 파워풀한 지휘로 긍정 에너지를 연주자에게 전달해 좋은 음악을 만들어냈다”고 평했다.
또 다른 재미는 관람객의 화려한 정장, 혹은 VIP 관람객을 구경하는 것이다. 빈 신년음악회에 가장 열광하는 나라 중 하나가 일본인 만큼, 예전부터 기모노를 입은 관객이 실황 중계에 많이 나타나곤 했다. 올해의 경우 한복을 입은 관객이 여럿 있었고, 서구 관객들로부터 아름답다는 찬사와 사진 요청을 받는 모습도 자주 눈에 띄었다.
올해 지휘자는 41세 안드리스 넬손스
반기문 전 유엔 사무총장 내외는 올해도 참석해 오스트리아의 하인츠 피셔 전 대통령과 나란히 앉아있었다. 이 둘은 빈 필하모닉의 문화 대사 역할인 ‘패트론’ 직을 맡고 있다. 사연을 묻는 질문에 반 전 총장은 “빈 필하모닉과는 전 유엔 사무총장으로서뿐만 아니라 전 오스트리아 대사(1998~2000)로서 인연이 깊다. 음악을 통한 교류에 관심이 많아 대사 시절 한·오스트리아 필하모닉 오케스트라를 발족했고, 2018년엔 이곳 황금홀에서 20주년 공연도 했다. 지금은 IOC 윤리위원장을 맡으면서 스포츠와 음악이야말로 국가간 평화와 이해 증진에 큰 역할을 한다고 느낀다”고 말했다.
올해의 특이한 점은 베토벤의 소품 춤곡 ‘12개의 콩트르당스’ 중 일부가 레퍼토리에 포함된 것이다. 올해가 베토벤 탄생 250주년이기 때문이다.
앙코르 곡은 전통대로 요한 슈트라우스 2세의 ‘아름답고 푸른 도나우’와 그의 아버지 요한 슈트라우스 1세의 ‘라데츠키 행진곡’이었다. 라데츠키 행진곡이 나올 때는 관객들이 박자에 맞춰 박수를 치는 게 관례다. 넬손스의 신호에 따라 힘차게 박수를 치면서, 모두가 힘차게 내딛을 수 있는 2020년이 되기를 기원했다.
