Rice consumption falls below 60kg per person

Korea’s per capita annual rice consumption fell to a record low in 2019 amid changes in diet and eating habits, data showed Thursday.

Per capita average annual rice consumption hit a fresh low of 59.2 kilograms (130.5 pounds) last year, down 3 percent from a year earlier, according to the data compiled by Statistics Korea.

It marked the first time for the amount to fall below 60 kilograms.

Rice is a key staple food for Koreans, but its consumption has been on a steady decline since 1980, when per capita average annual rice consumption was 132.4 kilograms.

The latest figure indicates Koreans consumed around 162 grams of rice on a daily basis.

Consumption of non-rice grains edged down 2.4 percent on-year to 8.2 kilograms in 2019 from 8.4 kilograms posted a year ago.

The amount of rice used by manufacturers also decreased 1.5 percent.
