National Ballet reappoints director

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism reappointed director Kang Sue-jin for the third time as the art director for the Korean National Ballet company on Monday.

“Director Kang has worked to familiarize ballet to the local audiences, selling out up to 95 percent of performances over the last three years,” the ministry said.

Taking on the job for the third time since her inauguration in 2014, Kang will be serving yet again for the next three years.

The director is known to have made continuous efforts to financially stabilize the Korean National Ballet company and to raise the international status of Korean ballet through active interaction and promotion of local performances.

“We hope that director Kang can continue to cooperate with famous ballet companies and choreographers worldwide to enhance Korean ballet’s global position,” Minister Park Yang-woo said in an official statement.

“We anticipate that Kang will highly contribute to the development of the national ballet through the creation of our own distinctive ballet performances based on Korean traditions.”

Kang, who was a prima ballerina of the prestigious Stuttgart Ballet, was juggling two roles as an artistic director of the Korean National Ballet and a principal dancer of the German ballet company, until she retired as a ballerina in the summer of 2016.
