Internet giant Naver is partnering with GS Caltex to digitally transform the energy affiliate of GS Group, the two companies announced on Tuesday.

They agreed to use Naver’s cloud technology at Caltex gas stations to store data for charging electric vehicles (EVs), scooters and bikes.

Caltex will establish a system to manage transaction data from its electric vehicle charging stations within the first half of this year.

The refiner will also adopt Line Works, a corporate messaging tool developed by a subsidiary of Naver, for internal communication and with its clients.

Naver’s artificial intelligence technology will be used to digitalize existing documents or images and simplify tasks at Caltex.

“It’s meaningful because leading companies in their respective fields are cooperating,” the two companies said in a statement.

“[GS Caltex and Naver] will keep exploring new offerings for our clients and strengthening competitiveness,” they said.

The cloud and data management service for gas stations could represent a new revenue model for Naver.

The refiner believes digitalization and deployment of data is important for the future.

The introduction of electric vehicles also increased the need to embrace advanced digital tools.

In line with that effort, GS Caltex joined with LG Electronics last year to launch hybrid gas stations equipped with EV chargers.

The hybrid stations offers new services for EV owners like electric chargers and EV car-sharing and maintenance services. The stations will continue offering existing services like car washing and repairs for gas-powered cars.
