‘Parasite’ and Korea triumphant at Oscars

Director Bong Joon-ho cemented his place in Korean and international film history when his “Parasite” won four Oscars at the 92nd Academy Awards on Sunday: Best Picture, Best Director, Best International Feature Film and Best Original Screenplay.

일요일 제92회 아카데미상 시상식에서 영화 ‘기생충’으로 4개 부문(작품상, 감독상, 각본상, 국제영화상)을 석권한 봉준호 감독은 한국과 국제 영화계에 그의 입지를 굳혔다.

It was also the first foreign language film to ever receive the Best Picture award. “Thank you,” Bong said after winning Best Director, the third win of the night. “I will drink until next morning.”

외국어 영화가 아카데미 작품상을 수상한 것은 사상 처음이다. 봉 감독은 이날 세번째 상으로 최고상인 작품상을 수상하면서 “감사합니다. 나는 내일 아침까지 술을 마실 겁니다”고 말했다.

Although press around the world predicted at least one win for “Parasite” - Best International Feature Film seemed the surest bet - the other three wins were a sweep few expected, particularly Best Picture.

세계 언론은 영화 ‘기생충’이 최소 1개 부문은 수상할 것이라고 예측했었다. 국제영화상을 가장 유력하게 꼽았다. 그러나 다른 3개 부문 수상은 거의 예상하지 못했다. 특히 작품상은 전혀 예상하지 못했다.

“I’m speechless,” the film’s producer Kwak Sin-ae said through tears while accepting the Best Picture Oscar at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angles. A large number of the cast and crew of “Parasite” took to the stage upon the film’s epic victory.

LA 돌비극장에서 공동 프로듀서로 작품상을 받은 곽신애는 눈물을 흘리며 “할 말을 잃었어요”라고 말했다. 영화 ‘기생충’이 아카데미 최고상인 작품상을 수상하자 출연 배우들과 스텝들이 우르르 무대 위로 올라갔다.

“We never imagined this to ever happen,” Kwak continued. “We are so happy. I feel like a very opportune moment in history is happening right now. I express my deepest gratitude and respect to all the members of the Academy for making this decision.”

그녀는 “이런 일이 생길 것이라고는 상상도 못했어요. 우리는 아주 행복해요. 지금 이 순간 역사가 이루어진 기분입니다. 이런 결정을 하신 아카데미 회원 모두에게 경의와 감사를 드린다”고 말했다.
