Jumping on the bandwagon (KOR)

The speech actor Hwang Jung-min made after receiving the Best Actor award at the Blue Dragon Film Awards in 2005 for “You Are My Sunshine” is still talked about. He said, “When about 60 crew members and actors set up a nice table, only I enjoy my meal and get to have all the spotlight, so I feel sorry.”

People who saw the movie wouldn’t think Hwang had just come to the table and eaten. He acted with all his heart, and the audience laughed and cried because of his performance. He showed the virtue of modesty to ask people to acknowledge the efforts that many people made to complete the film.

Director Bong Joon-ho’s “Parasite” swept the Cannes Film Festival’s Palme d’Or, Golden Globes, British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards and Oscars. It was the first time since “Marty” in 1956 for a film to win both the Palme d’Or, which is considered the highest honor in cinematic arts, and an Academy Award for Best Picture, the pinnacle of commercial cinema. It is also the first film in a language other than English to win the Best Picture award.

Even before the celebration is over, I hear people jumping on the bandwagon. The ruling Democratic Party made a promise to introduce an unemployment insurance system for people in arts and culture, while the opposition party wants to establish a film museum dedicated to Bong in his hometown of Daegu. They also use the accomplishments of “Parasite” to attack each other. They are reminded of the cultural blacklist of the Park Geun-hye administration and criticize each other.

The success of “Parasite” does not guarantee an overnight improvement in the treatment of people in arts and culture. Those who were related to the past administration’s persecution of arts and culture are also entitled to praise the movie as citizens.

The first step to encourage the filmmakers to spend sleepless nights for the comprehensive art of cinema is to offer them support and applause. Unnecessary attempts to ride on the success of “Parasite” are simply an insult to them.

배우 황정민이 2005년 영화 ‘너는 내 운명’으로 청룡영화제 남우주연상을 받은 뒤 남긴 수상 소감은 지금까지도 회자된다. 그는 “60명 정도 되는 스태프와 배우가 멋진 밥상을 차려 놓으면 저는 먹기만 하면 되는데, 스포트라이트는 제가 다 받는다. 그게 죄송스럽다”고 했다.
영화를 본 사람이라면 황정민을 그저 ‘숟가락만 얹은 사람’이라고 생각할 수 없다. 그는 혼신의 힘을 다해 연기했고, 많은 관객이 그의 연기에 울고 웃었다. 그가 굳이 겸양의 덕을 내비친 건 영화라는 종합예술을 완성하기 위해 얼마나 많은 이들이 땀과 눈물을 쏟아내는지 알아 달라는 의미였을 게다.
봉준호 감독의 영화 ‘기생충’이 칸 영화제 황금종려상과 골든글로브, 영국아카데미에 이어 미국 아카데미도 휩쓸었다. 작품상 시상자로 무대에 오른 명배우 제인 폰다가 ‘패러사이트!(Parasite·기생충의 영어 제목)’를 호명하는 순간 전 국민이 함께 기뻐했다. 예술영화계의 최고 상이라 불리는 황금종려상과 상업영화의 최고봉인 아카데미 작품상을 동시에 거머쥔 건 1956년 ‘마티’ 이후 처음이다. 영어가 아닌 언어로 만든 영화가 작품상을 받은 것도 처음이다.
감동이 채 가시기도 전에 어디선가 ‘숟가락 얹는 소리’가 들린다. 여당은 문화·예술인을 위한 실업보험제도 도입을 공약으로 내놨고, 야당은 봉 감독의 고향인 대구에 봉준호 영화박물관을 건립하겠다고 나섰다.
한술 더 떠 ‘기생충’의 성취를 서로 공격하는데 이용하기도 한다. 전 정권의 ‘문화·예술계 블랙리스트’ 사건을 떠올리며 서로 헐뜯고, 무대에 올라 수상소감을 밝힌 재벌 출신 투자자(혹은 총괄 프로듀서)를 두고 비난과 옹호의 말을 쏟아낸다.
‘기생충’이 성공했다 해서 하루 아침에 문화·예술인의 처우가 개선될 것도 아니고, 본인의 뜻과 상관 없이 박물관을 지을 일은 더더욱 아니다. 전 정권과 관련된 이들이라 해서 국민의 한 사람으로서 찬사를 보내지 말란 법도 없다. 상업영화에서 자본의 역할은 결코 빼놓을 수 없는 요소이기도 하다.
영화라는 종합예술을 위해 고뇌의 밤을 지새는 영화인의 용기를 북돋는 첫걸음은 함께 응원하고 박수를 보내는 것이다. 쓸데없이 숟가락을 얹으려 한다면 오히려 그들을 욕보이는 일이다.
