크루즈

2005년 4월 9일 부산항은 축제 분위기였다. 개항 이래 가장 큰 크루즈가 기항했다. 길이 290m, 폭 50m, 높이 62.5m, 11만5875톤급인 크루즈 이름은 '사파이어 프린세스'호다. 이 배는 쌍둥이 자매선이 있는데 이름이 '다이아몬드 프린세스'호다. 자매선은 같은 해 10월 부산항에 처음 들렀다. 어, 그런데 배 이름이 낯익다. 코로나19 사태로 일본 요코하마항에 격리된 채 정박 중인 그 배다. 승객과 승무원 3700여명 중 17일까지 400명 가까운 사람이 감염 확진 판정을 받았다.

대항해 시대 이후 대륙 간 인력과 물자의 운송 수요가 급증했다. 19세기, 해양정기선 시대가 시작됐다. '타이태닉'호(1912년 영국 사우샘프턴에서 미국 뉴욕으로 가던 첫 항해 중 침몰) 같은 배 말이다. 해양정기선 시대는 1960년대 대형 여객기가 등장하면서 막을 내렸다. /해운사는 활로를 모색했다. 선박 여행의 패러다임을 이동에서 오락으로 바꿨다. 크루즈 탄생 배경이다. 1936년 첫 항해에 나선 '퀸 메리'호 등은 해양정기선에서 크루즈로 옮겨가던 중간 과정이다.

크루즈가 인기를 끌자 미국 ABC 방송사는 1977년 시트콤 〈러브 보트〉(The Love Boat, 국내 제목 〈사랑의 유람선〉)를 제작, 방영했다. 크루즈는 호텔급 객실과 다양한 식당, 쇼핑몰, 극장, 카지노, 스포츠 및 휴게 시설 등을 갖췄다. 기항지에서 내리지 않고도 24시간 즐길 수 있다. 지난해 전 세계 크루즈 이용자는 3천만명(국제크루즈라인연합·CLIA 추산). 현재 전 세계 50여 개 선사에서 크루즈 300여 척을 운영 중이다(CLIA 기준). 전 세계 크루즈 절반이 카리브해(32%)와 지중해(17%)에 모여 있다. 최대업체는 '다이아몬드 프린세스'호의 모회사인 카니발사( 2018년 기준 시장점유율 42.8%)다.

크루즈는 캐주얼, 프리미엄, 럭셔리급으로 분류한다. 승객당 승무원 수, 승객당 총톤수 등이 기준이다. 저렴한 캐주얼급의 경우 3박 기준 1인당 200달러 안팎인 상품도 있다. '다이아몬드 프린세스'호는 프리미엄급이다. 국내에선 크루즈 하면 으레 '(초)호화'라는 수식어를 떠올렸다. 하지만 이제 사람들은 패트리디쉬(세균 배양접시)를 떠올린다. 바이러스 앞에서 호화로움 따위는 무색하다.
