Comedian Johnny Yune, who brought talk shows to Korea, dies

Comedian Johnny Yune died on Sunday in Los Angeles at the age of 84.

Born 1936, Yune began the first American-style talk show in Korea after spending years working as an actor and stand-up comedian in America.

He studied vocal music at Wesleyan University and began his career as a comedian in New York City in 1964.

He performed on “The Tonight Show” in 1977, becoming the first Korean to do so.

In 1989, he came to Korea and started his show, “The Johnny Yune Show” with singer Cho Young-nam.

He was appointed as an auditor for the Korea Tourism Organization in 2014 and held the position until 2016 when he was hospitalized for a brain bleed. Soon after, he went to the United States for treatment.
