With the coronavirus outbreak showing no sign of slowing down, many concerts and cultural performances slated for this month and early next month are being canceled or postponed.
American rock band Green Day canceled a concert scheduled for Seoul on March 22. The three-member band was scheduled to perform in the capital for the first time in 10 years at Jamsil Arena in southern Seoul.
British singer-songwriter Tom Walker’s first Seoul concert was canceled, too. The musician was scheduled to perform on March 31 at Hyundai Card Understage, central Seoul.
The Universal Ballet Company also decided to cancel its “Sleeping Beauty” performance, slated to be held between April 2 and 5 at the Universal Arts Center in eastern Seoul.
REBECCA
Chungmu Arts Center
Through March 15 : The musical “Rebecca” is based on the Gothic romance novel by Daphne du Maurier, but the show is reportedly also inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s 1940 film “Rebecca” as well.
The musical, which combines romance and suspense, first hit the stage in Vienna in 2006 and has become a beloved musical.
Set in a mansion called Manderley, the musical tells the story of Maxim de Winter, a wealthy widower who lost his wife Rebecca to a drowning accident but still can’t get over the traumatic past. He comes to get married to a woman named I, but the new Mrs. Winter finds that Mrs. Danvers, who has been housekeeping the mansion, still lives in the shadow of Rebecca by worshiping her, and the housekeeper even sees her as nuisance.
When the musical was first staged in Seoul back in 2013, it was the highest-selling musical for five consecutive weeks.
Musical director Robert Johanson has been at the helm of the production since its the premiere.
The show starts at 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays; 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays; 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturdays and national holidays; and 3 p.m. on Sundays. There are no shows on Mondays.
Tickets range from 60,000 won ($50) to 150,000 won.

MAMMA MIA!

April 7 - May 31: The Korean production of the megahit musical is coming to Seoul after making stops in cities all across the country.
Sophie is about to get married and wants her father to give her away, but the problem is she does not know anything about her father. After taking a peek in her mother’s diary, she gets to know three ex-boyfriends of her mother and eventually invites all the three candidates to her wedding to find out who her father is.
The cast includes veteran musical actresses Choi Jung-won and Shin Young-sook. The two will play Donna, while Luna, a former member of the girl group f(x), and Lee Su-bin, will alternate the role of Sophie.
The show starts at 8 p.m. on weekdays; and 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. on weekends. There are no shows on Mondays.
Tickets range from 60,000 won to 140,000 won.

OPENING
Seoul Arts Center, CJ Towol Theater
April 17 - 19: Marking its 10th anniversary, the Korea National Contemporary Dance Company begins this year with “Opening,” which consists of two original dance pieces.
One is titled “Beyond Black” and has been choreographed by Shin Chang-ho. Shin continuously asks questions about the relationship between humans and artificial intelligence through his works. “Beyond Black” is an extension of his such curiosity. In “Beyond Black,” the choreographer makes a comparison between moves of human dancers and those of artificial intelligence.
The other piece is entitled “The Rite of Spring,” choreographed by Ahn Sung-soo. Some religious rituals conducted by Russian pagans are also reinterpreted by Ahn. Female priests dedicate well-built men as scapegoats in the piece.
The dance performance starts at 7:30 p.m. on April 17 and 3 p.m. on April 18 and 19.
Tickets range from 10,000 won to 50,000 won.

Seoul Arts Center, Concert Hall
May 13: Pianist Son Yeol-eum holds the first recital in four years in Seoul. The pianist will play pieces of Robert Schumann, one of her favorite composers, such as “Arabesque in C major (Op. 18)” and “Fantasie in C major (Op. 17).”
All the pieces were reportedly written during the German composer’s turbulent period of his life.
After the Seoul concert, Son will move down to Busan to hold another recital in the port city.
The pianist made a name for herself after she won the second prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in 2011 when she was 25.
Apart from performing as a pianist, Son has been serving music directors at local music festivals. Most recently, she took part in Music in PyeongChang, a classical music festival held biannually in Pyeongchang County, Gangwon, as an artistic director.
The concert starts at 8 p.m.
Tickets range from 30,000 won to 100,000 won.

DRACULA: THE MUSICAL

Through June 7: Based on the novel “Dracula” by Irish author Bram Stoker, the musical revolves around Count Dracula who has been living alone for 400 years after he lost the love of his life. But one day Count Dracula falls in love with Mina Murray, a fiancee of young lawyer Jonathan Harker.
An intertwined love story of the three - Count Dracula, Mina and Jonathan - unfolds against the backdrop of a Gothic castle.
Singer and musical actor Kim Jun-su alternate the role of Dracula along with other musical actors Ryu Jung-han and Jeon Dong-suk.
It is the third time for Kim, a member of K-pop boy band JYJ, to play the role of Dracula after the 2014 and 2016 runs.
The musical starts at 8 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays; 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Wednesdays; 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on weekends and national holidays. There are no shows on Mondays.
