“Thank you for the great exhibition in such a gloomy time.”

“I liked everything - the commentaries, the editing and the presentation.”

These are some of the comments written underneath a video of an exhibition tour presented by the National Museum of Korea. The museum decided to give a special tour of its current “10,000 Years of Finnish Design ? Man, Matter, Metamorphosis” exhibit and air it online via Naver TV for 80 minutes on March 13 in an attempt to offer an opportunity for people to enjoy it despite the museum having closed its doors following the coronavirus outbreak. A total of 16,427 people tuned in and a total of 1,537 comments were posted, all of which were positive. Some even asked the state-run museum to continue broadcasting its exhibition tours online even after the museum resumes operation after the virus dies down.

The “10,000 Years of Finnish Design ? Man, Matter, Metamorphosis” exhibit shows how Finnish design has evolved around the country’s nature and ecosystem from the end of the Ice Age. It displays an array of Finnish designs loved by Koreans such as works by Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) as well as products from popular brands Iittala and Artek while juxtaposing them with artifacts from the National Museum of Finland to show how the design of Finland has evolved over the past 10,000 years. For the online broadcast, Baek Seung-mi, the curator of the exhibit and Yoon In-gu, a TV host, introduced the exhibition calmly.

“We have prepared this [live stream] in the hopes of lessening the frustration people may feel from being stuck at home due to the coronavirus that is wearing everyone out. We hope the program can make you feel at ease and cheer you up.”

This is an introduction the Cultural Heritage Administration posted together with a video clip titled “The Royal Snacks and the Table Setting of the Winter Season” on its YouTube channel on March 13. The clip is a part of the administration’s sound-oriented “Cultural Heritage ASMR” (standing for, autonomous sensory meridian response) series it started in an attempt to provide relaxing sensations through Korean cultural heritage.

Both the National Museum of Korea’s online exhibition tour and the Cultural Heritage Administration’s ASMR video clip were in fact not planned out just because of the outbreak. They were both already ongoing programs; however, after the spread of coronavirus in the country, the organizations made sure to promote it extensively.

“We were actually preparing to upload several online tour programs, but coincidently, the museum had to close its doors due to the coronavirus and we were able to provide the online contents just in time,” said Lee Hyun-joo, a museum spokesperson. “Although it’s not an alternative solution, it’s quite rewarding for us as we are able to comfort people with culture in times of difficulty.”

The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, which is also temporarily closed, decided to upload “Curator’s Exhibition Tours” that allow viewers to look at 10 of its previous exhibitions via the museum’s YouTube channel, MMCA TV. Seoul Museum of Art, which had to close all seven of its venues, is offering online tours on Naver TV of some of its previous and current exhibitions that people are missing out on, including “Compulsion to Repeat,” which ended last week at the Seosomun branch, and “Leandro Erlich: Both Sides Now” that is scheduled to continue until the end of this month at the Buk Seoul branch.

Seoul Baekje Museum, which has also been closed since Feb. 25, added that the museum offers an array of VR experiences via its website (baekjemuseum.seoul.go.kr).
