Laka finds the gender-neutral sweet spot

[LAKA]

As everyone knows, cosmetics are big in Korea. As of 2018, the country’s cosmetics market was estimated at around 9.7 trillion won ($7.8 billion), according to Euromonitor International, a market research firm based in London.

Add in personal care products like soaps and shampoos, and the market stretches beyond 14 trillion won, making it the world’s ninth largest.

With such avid consumers to cater to, cosmetics brands come and go. The brands that gain a foothold in such a competitive market have to offer something special.

A brand-new cosmetics brand recently gained much-needed publicity by featuring a male model dabbing lipstick onto his lips in a TV commercial.

The advertisement was broadcast at 8 p.m. on the prime-time news show “Newsroom” on JTBC. That time slot is one of the most expensive.

The cosmetics market for men has been growing through the years, but there was never such an ad.

It advertised a cosmetics brand named Laka, which is gender-neutral.

Laka has been in the market for less than two years and has become one of the hippest brands among teenagers and people in their 20s.

Laka’s products aren’t unique: lipsticks, eye shadows and blush. What is unique is its unisex concept. All of its products are for men and women.

For example, when the company shoots a commercial for lipstick, the commercial features two models, a man and a woman, wearing the same makeup. The male model looks like a well-groomed K-pop singer. The female model looks feminine. That’s mainly because Laka’s colors are neutral so that they are suitable for men and women alike.

First launched in May 2018, Laka instantly caught the attention of the so-called players: buyers for local distributors and merchandisers, who are always in search of new products.

Laka introduced itself to the world with a short video clip emphasizing its brand identity on Instagram. Inquiries poured in.

Four months later, Laka’s products were available in 20 branches of Olive Young, Korea’s biggest beauty and cosmetics goods chain.

Now, Laka’s products are available in 700 branches of Olive Young and through the company’s online store. They are also sold in Japan’s nationwide franchise drugstores such as Loft and @Cosme.

Earlier this year, Laka got an investment of 1.5 billion won from Leferi Beauty Entertainment, a company that nurtures and manages YouTube creators and influencers.

Clockwise from left: CEO Lee Min-mi of Laka Cosmetics. Two of Laka’s most popular products are lipsticks and eye palettes. Laka’s brand identity is gender-neutral so it uses male and female models to advertise the same product. [LAKA]

Who created this gender-neutral beauty brand? The JoongAng Ilbo, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily, caught up with Laka’s CEO, Lee Min-mi, 33.

Lee began in the advertising industry as an intern from when she was a college student. She worked at two different agencies and launched her own company called Brandipity with five colleagues.

Brandpity collaborated with LG Household & Health Care, a local cosmetics giant, producing digital ads for its The History of Whoo, sum37, Belief and VDL brands.

The company signed 3.5 billion won worth of advertising contracts in two years. Since then, it worked with more global brands including Estee Lauder and Swarovski.

Four years after launching the agency, Lee launched Laka Cosmetics.

Q. The advertising industry is ruthlessly competitive. What was it like to start your own agency?

A.
From the beginning, we were quite successful. We won two out of three contracts on average. Even when our bids failed, [the advertiser] often said, “We love your idea, but we can’t sign a deal with you because of our internal situation.”

What was your secret?

We were different from other agencies from the beginning. We brought only one proposal to agencies and the proposal was fresh and original and very applicable. Advertising agencies usually prepare three proposals when they have meetings with advertisers. They feel insecure with only one, and it’s also a kind of traditional custom. But I thought it was a waste of our time. One proposal is enough as long as you give your all to it.

Didn’t you feel anxious submitting only one proposal?

Most agencies spend about 50 percent of their time researching the market, but we don’t do that. We spend all our time racking our brains. We research the market on a regular basis. All our employees are interested in cosmetics products, so all we needed were some new ideas. We had twice as much time for preparation as other companies.

Yours was a lesser-known agency. How was it possible to sign a series of contracts with big-name companies?

We were lucky. It was around the time that the advertising industry was in a transitional period. Advertising platforms were moving from traditional areas like magazines and TV shows to digital platforms. The companies were in need of mind-boggling ideas. Their needs were met by our proposals.

Your business was doing well. Why did you jump into the cosmetics industry?

As we were making ads for cosmetics, we came to realize that all the employees were in love with cosmetics products. This beauty market is a place where your imagination becomes visualized in an attractive way. Of course, there were a lot of concerns even before the launch of the new business because we knew very little about distribution [of products.] A day after we uploaded our own brand advertising on Instagram, we got calls from buyers working at distribution companies. Things went smoothly after that.

What made you choose gender-neutral as your brand identity?

When we were creating this brand, we decided to talk about the time we live in through the brand. The hottest issues in the beauty market these days are vegan, gender and cruelty-free. Vegan and cruelty-free are already taken by others, but the gender issue was untouched.

Do men really use Laka?

Let me correct one misunderstanding. Our products are not just good for men. They’re good for anybody. If you get strong color pigmentation with one dab of lipstick, it’s not our product. Once you apply our lipstick, it’s hard to tell whether you have put on lipstick or not - but with a second or third try, you get to know the real colors of our products. That is our characteristic.

You have a male model putting on lipstick on your TV commercial.

That was made to catch the attention of the viewers. The message we wanted to deliver was not that men can try women’s cosmetics, but that anyone can use them. We see a lot of male customers buying our products. One of our lipsticks is called Leonard, and it is a sort of mixture of coral and light brown that makes a light brick color, and three out of 10 customers who buy it are men. It’s semi-transparent so you can still keep your natural lip color if you just add a little bit of color to your lips. The next most popular product is a liquid foundation that is available also in darker tones.

A lot of your products are based on neutral colors. What are the neutral colors?

They are colors of low chroma. We added beige to every color we provide so that they could match well with the complexion of Koreans.

You began distributing your products by teaming up with Olive Young. It’s been said that one has to jump through hoops in Korea to work with Olive Young.

What we did was just upload our brand advertising on social media, but we got a lot of calls. I was amazed, too.

What is your secret to success?

We didn’t aim to produce marketable products. We wanted to read the market and produce things that can represent us. We paid lots of attention to packaging. And this was possible maybe because all of the employees love to use and buy cosmetics products. We were so willing to make products to please ourselves, so we gave it our best.
