Tarnished campaign (KOR)

The opposition United Future Party (UFP) filed a complaint with prosecutors Wednesday over ruling Democratic Party (DP) Secretary General Yoon Ho-jung’s derogatory remarks about the UFP’s Chief Campaign Manager Kim Chong-in. Earlier, Yoon compared Kim to Don Quixote, UFP Chairman Hwang Kyo-ahn to his horse Rocinante, and the opposition’s campaign committee co-chairman Park Hyeong-joon to Sancho Panza. Yoon ridiculed Kim as a warrior on a quixotic crusade to impeach President Moon Jae-in.

After attacking the UFP for “spreading a virus of slurs on top of the coronavirus” ahead of the April 15 parliamentary elections, the DP has relished its war of words. DP Chairman Lee Hae-chan raised controversy by saying, “Every time I visit Busan, I wonder why it is still such a pitiful city.” A DP candidate said that South Korea has fired more missiles than North Korea did. Such remarks are certainly aimed at rallying support from liberals, but will only encourage public disdain towards politics.

The opposition UFP has been attacking DP candidates as “collaborators or assault troops for the Blue House.” On the party’s YouTube channel, the UFP made sarcastic comments about President Moon, saying, “He can be served eco-friendly free meals for a while after serving his term because any prison in the country would offer them free of charge.”

Even Chairman Hwang got involved with a slip of the tongue about people who accessed the “Nth room,” where violent sex crimes were distributed through chat rooms on the Telegram instant messaging app.

As direct contact with voters is difficult during the coronavirus outbreak, the campaign should be a contest of ideas. But as election day approaches, an exchange of scurrilous words — and populist pledges — are dominating the campaign.

An increasing number of people are suffering from the coronavirus outbreak, and their anxieties and fears for their livelihoods deepen each day. Negative campaigns accompanied by slander of rivals cannot help the Korean economy stay afloat. Mudslinging, indiscriminate accusations, and incitements based on ideology and regionalism only breed political hatred.

As the campaign turns uglier than ever before, voters should take note and be more prudent. They must focus on the campaign promises, platforms and integrity of each candidate. Their votes will determine the future of a country in crisis.

저질 막말·비방만 남은 막장 총선, 유권자는 안중에도 없나
미래통합당이 어제 윤호중 더불어민주당 사무총장을 명예훼손 혐의로 고소했다. 윤 총장이 김종인 통합당 선대위원장을 '돈키호테'에 비유하며 "황교안 애마를 타고 박형준 시종을 앞에 데리고 대통령 탄핵이란 가상 풍차를 향해 장창을 뽑아든 모습"이라고 말한 걸 문제 삼았다. 통합당에선 "그렇다면 2016년엔 김종인 돈키호테, 애마 문재인, 시종 윤호중이냐"고 물었다. 민주당은 거기엔 '저질 정치공세'라고 생각할 게 뻔하다.
민주당은 그동안 줄곧 "국민을 지치게 하는 건 코로나 바이러스뿐 아니라 통합당이 내놓고 있는 상식 이하의 '막말 바이러스'"라고 통합당을 공격하더니 스스로 막말 전쟁 한복판에 뛰어들었다. 이해찬 대표는 "부산에 올 때마다 왜 이렇게 도시가 초라할까"라고 말해 지역 폄하 논란에 휩싸였다. 당 후보 중엔 "우리가 북한보다 미사일을 더 많이 쐈다"며 그릇된 대북 인식에 입각한, 막말을 넘어선 망언·망발도 있었다. 좀 더 선명한 메시지로 지지층을 결집하려는 목적이겠지만 정치 혐오만 키우는 잘못된 행태다.
'청와대 부역자, 돌격대'로 민주당을 공격 중인 통합당 역시 오십보백보다. 당의 공식 유튜브에선 얼마 전 문재인 대통령을 향해 "임기 후 오랫동안 친환경 무상급식을 먹이면 된다. 어느 교도소든 친환경 무상급식이 제공된다"고 비아냥대다가 사과했다. '나이가 들면 다 장애인이 된다'는 등의 발언으로 논란을 부른 지역구 출마 당 후보는 제명했다. 황교안 대표의 'n번방 호기심' 발언 등으로 당 내부에선 설화주의보가 내려졌지만 엄중 경고 하루 만에 실언이 반복되는 등 통제불능 상황이다.
가뜩이나 코로나 사태로 대면·접촉 선거운동이 사라져 어느 때보다 위축된 형태로 치러지는 총선이다. 이럴 때일수록 활발한 정당 정책, 후보 공약 경쟁으로 유권자 마음을 사야겠지만 현실은 정반대다. 투표일이 다가올수록 혼탁 양상은 심각해지고 선거 고질병인 포퓰리즘 공약에 막말과 꼼수만이 넘쳐 이젠 유권자를 우롱하는 수준일 뿐이다. 선거 때마다 되풀이 되는 퇴행적 정치 문화의 되풀이다. 하지만 지금은 인물과 공약·정책이 사라진 깜깜이 선거, 꼼수 정치로 대충 넘어갈 한가한 상황이 아니다.
불안과 공포 속에 잠 못 자고 생계가 막막하다고 토로하는 목소리가 높다. 네거티브 전략만 앞세운 상대 비방과 막말 전쟁으론 미증유의 위기 속에 빠져든 대한민국을 구하기 어렵다. 중상모략과 무차별 비방, 지역주의 선동이란, 진영 논리만 앞세운 구태는 오히려 투표 의욕을 꺾고 정치 혐오, 리더십 실종만 부를 뿐이다. 코로나 이후 변화에 대비한 비전 경쟁만이 유일한 선택 기준이 돼야 한다. 선거판이 비정상적일수록 유권자는 더욱 냉철하고 현명해져야 한다. 그나마 내세운 공약과 정책, 무엇보다 후보의 인물 됨됨이를 꼼꼼히 살피는 투표가 답이다. 나라의 미래가 유권자의 밝은 눈에 달려 있다.
